Attendances 2023

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

the GAA need to advertise venues and times a bit quicker.
Example: Galway-Armagh When? Where? we know its sometime June 17-18
This would help attendances as most of us have to make plans and arrangements,
minding kids and family, the elderly especially, and even pets, me dogs get hungry.

People living west of Galway City have to spend an hour getting across Galway City everyday. Can't really be using that as part of a comparison.

Replying To PattyONeill:  "A lot of the people complaining about modern Gaelic football are the same people who watch dozens of boring soccer games on TV all year and maybe even travel to England to watch them. I appreciate that Gaelic football isn't what it was but it is still better than soccer.
I thought the first half of the Ulster final was a boring watch, people were just chatting in the stands and some weren't even watching the game."
I ageee with you about soccer as well , so many uneventful matchs as well similar to Gaelic football . Soccer totally overrated sport for the brain dead .
Hurling & Rugby are by a country mile far better viewing in 90% of matchs than soccer or Gaelic football and even in the most gaa houses in Munster like my own people are acting accordingly.
In Munster outside of Kerry and West Cork Gaelic football is becoming the preserve of a few die hards with less and less of the general population caring .
Good game to get fit but terrible to watch .

Hurling has suffered too imo as a spectacle, with the increased attention to the retention of possession, via short stick passing, handpassing & throwing. One of the key ingredients that made both football and hurling so exciting to watch for people of my generation, was that possession was put up for grabs so often. In fact, many of history's 'great' performances stemmed from players just having a field day at dominating the possession that came up for grabs so regularly within their zone. Coaches have removed that element of the 'spectacle' by making possession retention sacred. Possession retention, combined with the defensive necessities required to be in any way competitive at the highest level, have completely destroyed football as a spectacle. Similar recent trends in hurling have also diminished the game as a spectacle imo.

It is 45 miles from Armagh city to Breffini park, it is 100 miles from Galway city to Breffini park, add 50 miles for people from Clifden. Cavan is not central. Roscommon is central. Sure play Mayo v Cork in Killarney.

Agreed, Surprise GAA, provincial councils can announce their fixtures 5/6 months ahead of the games yet GAA still cant confirm details with 2 weeks of game!

Take it as a summer holiday!!

But i get your point. I think ppl (certainly me) have had enough of running around the country after the GAA atm. Its becoming an expensive hobby. I won't even mention the ticketing system and trying to get those tickets to other family members. Put you off going to matches

The 5,700 odd at Roscommon was announced on Sunday Sport and also at Roscommon so I'm lead to believe.

Calling people who watch soccer brain dead just shows what type of person you are. Football has always been a minority sport in the hurling heartlands and I'm not sure why it matters. Hurling isn't growing outside of that and the elitist and smug attitude displayed here is partly why.

Galway have reinvigorated the Leinster championship.

Surely a Leinster final in Pearse Park would more befitting a game like today's than the quarter-full croker we saw.

I agree I definitely think that playing in thurlas or other such venues close or between the two finalists should also be considered. Maybe a home and away agreement also like tipp and cork in Munster had pre round robin. But then you have the people crying it has to be played in lenister, alot of these people who probably only go when their own counties are playing and were not in attendance today and still want it played in leinster. it should not be on the same day as the Munster final either imo, hurling people usually attend both and they probably should be on two separate weekends.

Thurles as a neutral venue would be a lot better and a traditional Hurling venue well located between Galway & KK.
The athmosphere & Scenes in Limerick yesterday were amazing and a day that will be remembered forever by those lucky enough to be there and there were thousands others with no tickets in Pubs & Hotels all over Limerick city yesterday, one of the busiest days ever if not the busiest in the city according to business owners.

I can tell you never once in my life have I heard one Leinster person say the final should be played in Leinster. Never once.
With the advent of online ticket sales, surely "who gets the gate" is a moot point? If Kilkenny and Galway met in an All-Ireland quarter final, nobody would bat an eyelid.

It must be remembered that both Limerick and Clare were, more or less, playing at home! Powerful attendance, all the same.

With all due respect many rugby matches are in the same category as soccer and to where gaelic football could be going. I know you are a very informed poster but there appears a bias in your post on this one. Agreed hurling is generally good to watch although I note in recent years the 'possession' aspect that has creeped into the game with an awful lot of of tippy tappy handpassing. Gaelic football to me is still more exciting than rugby any day of the week even though like many I follow all of the four sports name checked. The handpassing possession issue in gaelic football does take from the moments where we see catch and kick but still we have had a few nail biters in recent years. Last year for example the Armagh Galway and Dublin Kerry games were great to watch just to name two games at the business end of the championship.

Gaelic football's popularity in West Cork is waning. Rugby is gaining fast , and 5 of the starters for Munster in Cape Town were from West Cork, with Hodnett scoring winning try. Eleven of the team were from Cork, and compare the recent attendance at Cork/Kerry in the Pairc (10K) to the attendance of 40K in 1976 Munster final replay between same teams.

I've said it on here before - the same is happening in Kildare. Rugby has increased massively in popularity. Theres even a decent youth section in a nearby Cricket club. The GAA doesn't have the same sporting monopoly that it once had.

The inter-county game is the shop window - we're fixing the games to go up against big occasions in other sports; putting games behind a paywall - the perfect ingredients to decimating the games as years pass by. People are voting with their feet.

Was issues with the scanner and the PA should never have read out that incorrect figure, a figure that many newspapers then published.

The real attendance was 8 to 9k.
The 3,850 capacity Stand had the odd empty seat so say 3,500.
The open seats had at worst 1,500
The big Terrace had a minimum 3,000.
