Football Boots

(Oldest Posts First)

Anyone have any good tips for breaking in new football boots? Tried out a new pair last night on the astro and I had to change them after 15 minutes. I'm going to try wearing them around the house for the next few days and I'll use vaseline when I next go to play with them.

I've also seen a tip online to submerge them in warm water for half an hour, and then wear them for half an hour immediately after? Have some doubts about that though. Completely soaking the boots can't be good for them surely?

I can't understand why you would need to break in football boots. They are like slippers with studs.

Not for me. Maybe it's this particular brand but I need to gradually get used to them. There's no way I could just buy a pair of boots and go straight into a game with them.

Fair enough. I'm old enough to remember, and have worn, boots that took time to wear in when I was a boy. But, although my playing are long past, the boots I used to wear say about 40 years ago, the leather was really soft, could wear them straight away, with no problems.

Having no skill, and being old, in the 1980s, I used to buy black rugby boots, made by "Cotton Oxford". They had a big round hard toe in them. You could wallop a ball off the ground. Sometimes it even went straight. Skilful players said they looked like site safety boots with steel toecaps, but I liked them.

Crocs with studs!

Maybe it's just a sign for me to hang the boots up completely!

I thought at this stage you would have known what fits and what doesn't. I only ever wore 2 pairs for years and years and still buy them. Copa Mundial and World Cup. Never even looked at any other type always had the 2 on the go every year.

Yeah I usually wear Adidas and these are Adidas as well. The astro isn't the best place to be trying them anyway.
I'm gonna wear them for a half (grass pitch) this weekend and see how they go. I'll have the old ones on the sideline if needed.

When I was a gossun my mother used to rub soap on the inside and outside of the heels of my fupple boots to soften them up.

Another supposed hack for shoes (might work for boots?) is: wear super thick socks, then put on the boots and run a hair dryer all around them for a few minutes while moving your feet around lots in the footwear. Then if you're seriously desperate you could try what soldiers in WWI used to do and fill the boots with "sweet pea mixture" and leave them overnight to soften ;)

It's a long time ago but I think it was Croke Park or Blackthorn for me . I could be wrong.

Good tips there. How often do you change your boots down about Cavan? Every decade or so? :P
