Delayed Medals?

(Oldest Posts First)

See Westmeath had to wait 14 years to get a set of medals:

What was going on there?

Are there any instances in your county (at club or county level), where one or more players are still waiting for a medal long after they won a competition?

That problem is more widespread than we would like to think. There needs to be a law stipulating that players get their medals within a certain time. Some official gets the medals and thinks that they are for him.

Was cleaning out some old presses in our clubhouse a few years ago, and at the back of one of them, came across a box of trophies with the inscription "Strawberry Fair Hurling Tournament winners 1981". Anybody's guess who actually hurled in that tournament, so they still haven't been handed out.....anybody want one????

One of my few times to bother the trophy makers was when we won a junior hurling cup years ago, Not a sign of any silver in the quarter century that has transpired!

Get a grip. Introducing laws to give out medals.

They should be given to players on the day of the final or at worst at an event held at max a month after a final has been played,
used to hate when we won a medal playing underage hurling/gaelic like if you won divisional final and that would have been played anywhere between april/may(in case of gaelic football) and July/August(in the case of hurling) and you wouldnt get the medals until December.

Did the late Tony Keady not wait 29 years to receive his MOTM trophy he won after the 1998 All Ireland Final.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to get a medal you in less than 14 years after you won it.

He only hated the delay in receiving his medal. No doubt most winners get their rewards, but the player has no guarantee when, or even if, he will receive his medal. They burst their guts to win and then the uncertainty which follows can devalue the achievement. I have read and heard of players waiting decades - in vain. Another fellow told me he won an underage hurling medal, but the club would not give it because he wanted to join a team which was nearer to where he lived. In the absence of some rule what is a player to do ? Take legal action ? The GPA should take up this issue.

I doubt it considering he wasn't even playing in that final.

You've misunderstood.
I hated the delay in getting the medal for winning.
You could win something in July or August. Earlier if it was garlic football and not get the medal until December

"Strawberry Fair Hurling Tournament"

Has there ever been a more Wexford sounding name for a competition?!

And the locals wonder why I slag them off at times ;)
Although I would have to be honest, I have become partial to some of Wexford's finest when they are in season.....
The Strawberry Fair (was/is?) a festival in Enniscorthy MesAmis. I think its halcyon days were behind it when I moved but back in the day it was a big deal.
Pikeman96, you should get in touch with that Wexford hurling guru (Edward Rowesome?) and ask him who won that competition.

The Strawberry Fair was indeed a very big deal in its heyday from the 1960s through to the mid-90s or so, in the days before festivals were held in most towns of any size. There's lots of old black and white footage in the RTE archives of the news reports they used to do from there each year.

The guru you refer to is Edmund rather than Edward. As regards who won the competition, it was obviously ourselves, or else we wouldn't have the trophies! The issue is that all these years later, we don't know who exactly togged out that day....and knowing that might be a stretch too far for even guru Ed.

Here's one for you. An uncle of mine played on the first Cavan Gaels team to lift a trophy, winning a Cavan County League in 1959. In a shameful display of horrificly small-minded, petty gombeen man behaviour, they waited until he died in 1995 before giving the medal to his wife. All because he had also played rugby.

Offaly and Kilkenny contested the 1998 All Ireland and Leinster Finals.

I'd say it was a simple typo by the poster who referred to 1998. Keady was man of the match in the 1988 final.

If I recall correctly, the story was that he and another team member were living in Dublin at the time, and went off and did their own thing in their local pub that night instead of going to the team banquet, so he wasn't there when the man of the match winner was announced. Don't know how long it was before he actually got it afterwards then, or why they wouldn't just have handed it to him when they saw him again.

Sorry for your uncle. That's an outrageous act of of nastiness on their behalf.

I think Tony Keady said that RTE should have given him the award at half time, or something like that?
