Sky Sports To Stop Showing GAA

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

"A new five-year media rights deal is to be announced this week but it won't incorporate Sky Sports, however, who have confirmed that their nine-year association has come to an end by "mutual agreement."...

"But BBC's continued interest in GAA broadcasting could see the All-Ireland finals being shown across the UK, potentially giving the GAA's showpiece games a huge overseas reach."

Is this a good thing?
Sky were looking for a 32-game package, including 16 league games, the GAA couldn't or wouldn't offer this. Personally, living as I do in the UK, the 32 game package would have been great. Although I have GAAGO, there are still not a great deal of live matches, especially league, to watch over here. Also, will the GAA have less income now that Sky have left? l'll miss the Sky coverage, always seemed to me to be better than RTE. What's the BBC coverage like in the North? Don't get it in Britain.

I dont have sky sports so I would go out to look at the matches. If you have Sky you can tune in BBC N.I. on the other channel section.

If you have iPlayer you can change your region to get BBC NI live.

Personally think it's a shame as I don't believe the quality or the quantity of the output will necessarily increase.

But hey ho, it makes the morons of the world like Buff Egan happy.

BBCNI GAA coverage is excellent. As others have said you can get it in Britain if you so wish.

No doubt Buff will be complaining about it next year when there's less games on TV...

Bbc NI coverage is like hurling coverage can't say a bad word about the games. A bit delusional.

Real watershed moment now for GAA coverage, plainly obvious 1 highlights show a week no longer fit for purpose and different avenues available now for live games that either weren't there or in their infancy when the Sky deal was announced in 2014.

Really?!

I haven't noticed that to be honest.

I like their coverage because their pundits, whether I agree with them or not, all have a deep knowledge of all the players that they're talking about, something that is severely lacking with the other broadcasters imo.

Wonder will TV3/Virgin Media start showing GAA again, Sky originally took over all their rights and games to show etc they even took most of their analysts, commentators as well. Would be handy having it with them again. Don't think RTE will he able to take on all of sky's games, maybe a good chunk of them but definitely not all. Eir sports show a lot of league games, they may try take on the championship games. Would love to see TG4 get it tbh, the savior of GAA coverage in a lot of ways. Took on league games and club games when no one was showing them or didn't want to. Proved to be very successful, be nice if they got some big championship games too. Super channel that max out there resources.

Life goes on, but hey, with all the political happenings on the local scene like changing political party leaders and prime ministers every other week they discovered they needed the cameras for domestic use.

I liked Ollie Canning and JJ Delaney on Sky.

Virgin barely even report GAA on news. Be well avoided.

TG4 is brilliant. Quality is outstanding and as you say, have covered club and underage when no-one else was. Be great to see them getting a few of the big end of championship games, and the revenue therefrom. Would boost their spend on more Irish language programming too!

It's the GAA who rejected the deal, Sky wanted to show more games. The last thing we want in Britain is more coverage of 'political happenings'.

JJ was good to be fair.

Hurling pundits tend to be a bit better than football pundits but they're similar in that once they have to talk about any team outside of Munster, Galway or Kilkenny, maybe Wexford (which isn't a huge problem in hurling to be fair) they're fairly lacking in knowledge from my experience.

In football they're generally much worse in that, outside of the few "big counties" they're not that knowledgeable imo. BBC's coverage excelled with pretty much every pundit knowing all of the players, not just the couple of marquee names.

Eir sports is gone. To me this is ****. Virgin is basically a British form based on itv so I doubt they will go for it. Sky I would say we're looking for the rights off eir for those games.

In fairness it was TV3's (Virgin) package that Sky originally won the rights to so they could well be interested in getting back what they once had.

I like their soccer coverage, Tommy Martin would make a decent host for GAA coverage as well I think, better than Matt Cooper who used to do it!.

If Virgin were to get the rights it'll be a good thing imo. No one was watching the games on Sky.

Eir Sport is gone RTE took over their national league games.

Who are the BBC's hurling pundits?

They only have had rights to the Ulster Football Championship unfortunately.
