I'll miss their pundits Peter Canavan in particular. It seems RTE just hire at random. And people saying they are ticking boxes ? What box does dessie dolan tick that he can still commentate on a game. Anytime I see RTE news on they are just bursting to report on results and news from the English Premier league, Just like now they are reporting steady about the British Gov and the change of leadership there like it was our own gov they were reporting on, God forbid they'd report on anything happening in our own country. Then it's on to rugby (for eg. some rugby player stubbed his toe at training and may not be available in 3 weeks time for some test/ challenge game etc etc.) then it's hockey cricket golf, and God knows what else, they might give a wee mention to the GAA at the very end of the sports news to report on some scrap involving Armagh again or something of that nature. I find GAAGo really good, and good value for the price I pay. If I'm too busy to watch a game live, I can watch on play-back anyway. Who needs all this analysis or a half-time panel? You watch the game with your own two eyes in real time. Either you understand the game and know what's happening or you don't! If you do, great. Then, you're like me. Tyrone uses some other independent production company for county club matches, and they're good. The GAA solution seems to be an increase in game availability on GAAGO. We haven't seen he details of this yet but by all accounts the streaming services to date, while welcome as an addition to the other services, have been of a poorer quality and are more expensive. The argument about grandad not having sky and not going to the pub applies to GAAGO as well. On a personal level if i can work out how to stream GAAGO directly onto my TV i'd be happy enough!! Pity they don't seem to have a samsung app or an app on android tv's. I am guessing it is not rocket science to do this so hopefully now that they seem to be going for this streaming model big time the GAA will make it a condition that they get their app availability up to date so even people with my technical ability can use it!! It's true, the games that Sky got were already on Tv3 who were looking to retain their rights but lost out to Sky. I thought it was a retrograde step at the time as it meant that a lot less people got to watch the games when they went to Sky. But I agree with you though that this new deal doesn't seem great. Dropping Sky without having another broadcaster lined up and shoving the games onto their streaming service doesn't seem like a great idea. Good thinking. Would like to use a GAA go app on TV if it had a reliable stream and good quality picture. You can watch games from your TV browser on gaago.ie or should be able to cast to your TV from app on your phone. I think the GAA are hoping for a double whammy in GAA GO coverage. They've seen during COVID how popular the locally streamed games were. Possibly they think they'll get more revenue from sales, ads, sponsorships than if Sky were paying for the coverage. I think they can offer a better deal than local streaming did, though in some cases they were even better with analysis too, which GAA GO didn't have. I listened to Alan Milton talking to Wooly yesterday about having halftime analysis and both complimenting Gráinne McElwain for anchoring the Sky Sports show. Possibly a future GAA GO presenter. I was away at the weekend myself, and on Sunday afternoon was in a place with about eight different screens, all of which were showing English soccer. Not one of them showing the club hurling finals on TG4. And because there were people watching soccer around every screen, the barman said he couldn't change channel on any of them, because then the people watching soccer there would have to move. Just stepping in here because with all due respect, you've shown a few times now that you're slightly misinformed on certain considerations here. First thing is that up to 2013, TV3 had rights to show nine senior inter-county championship matches. GAA then chose to make more matches available for broadcast. TV3 elected not to bid for them, largely because they felt they hadn't the resources in terms of camera crew, technical staff, presenters, budget, etc., to actually carry the extra games. It was at that stage that Sky stepped in. This time round, the GAA haven't "dropped" Sky. Sky chose themselves not to continue with their coverage. Part of the reason was because they sought assurances that no other matches would be fixed for the same time they'd be showing a live match. This simply isn't feasible when you consider the extra games to be fixed next year in the new football championship structure, along with how there are sometimes Munster and Leinster hurling championship round-robin matches fixed at the same time as well. Virgin Media had no interest whatsoever in replacing them as a broadcaster, for largely the same reasons as TV3 stepped away in the first place. RTE will again be showing 35 live matches and couldn't commit to 14 extra ones. TG4 felt they couldn't commit to any of these matches without dropping some of what they already show. The GAA can't force any broadcaster (terrestrial or otherwise) to show these matches if that broadcaster doesn't want to, for whatever reason. That's an awkward 1. I'd be much less inclined to watch club games that didn't involve our club myself. I did buy the Clare senior hurling final which was a good watch and well presented though. Interestingly there has been a bit of a backlash and a few centre city pubs that do good GAA trade have stopped showing soccer altogether other than LOI and internationals. Racing and GAA and no Sky other than the racing channel. I believe it has not done them any harm. No GAA on Sky also means they will save on bills! Lowest common denominator will always win out. I am hoping that this is a well thought out strategy and they have a plan in place. To be fair the Executive staff in the GAA (Milton, Mckenna etc) always give me the impression they are top of their game and very professional.
