Sky - Be Careful What U Wish For!

So Sky is bailing out of GAA coverage.

No doubt a lot of "true gaels" will be delighted even if it means going back to the pre sky days with way less matches available to view live

Hopefully Virgin/RTE/TG4 will pick up the slack.

Untrue.

There were no extra games shown on Sky that wouldn't have been shown had TV3 retained the rights.

Sky took over the games that were being shown free to air on TV3 at the time.

Sky deal meant there were less people watching those games is all that really happened.

Gaago and paying for individual matches on the way.
Say a tenner or 15 a game u pay to watch 3 or 4 matches in a month.
That's more than a sky sports subscription and at least u have whatever else is on Ur sky sports channels soccer, NFL, golf etc.

Be careful what u wish for.

Nobody complained when Setanta were showing league games. Sky's coverage was far superior to TV3's. Sky's coverage also forced RTÉ to get it's act together in terms of the quality of their coverage and analysis.

I think RTE have more interest in English soccer and rugby than they do in our national games, seems that way to me anyway from the coverage they give.
I never had Sky so I won't miss it but I have seen it on accassion and they had great pundits compared to the dross on RTE.
Hopefully TG4 will show more games now. TG4 is the only decent station we have in Ireland.

That's a matter of opinion. Some people would agree with you in relation to what they said about the split season and others would disagree with you. I felt RTE's analysis prior to and after the Sky deal had degenerated to the point where is was little more than an old boys club very smugly rehashing their Sunday newspaper columns. RTE never showed a second of live football or hurling from the end of the football final finals on the third Sunday in September to the beginning of the football/hurling championships the following May. The Sky deal changed that. Sky's analysis was and remains superior to RTE's. Given the exodus of RTÉ analysts and presenters and given the demise of the Sky deal now represents a real opportunity for a complete overhaul of RTE's presentation of the games including Camogie.

I taught their coverage around the spilt season wasn't debate, it was agenda and propaganda. They brought it up on the 1st hour of their 1st show of the year on Easter Sunday which wasn't even 1/3 of the way through the new calendar, 1 of the pundits said the Dublin hurling championship wasn't starting til September which was a lie, on a podcast he brought up lads going to America for the summer as a black mark against the split season, I'm sorry ever since I remember with every calendar lads have been going to the states for the summer and was going to be bigger numbers this year due to lack of travel during covid lockdowns. They made out little or no games would be played in August and there was games on all across the country every weekend. I agree that some of the RTE coverage degenerated but the 2 common denominators for me there were Brolly and Spillane. There soccer and hurling coverage has regressed in recent years.

Did it though? The Sky broadcast rights applied to UK, not to rest of the world. The rest of the world has been able to watch live games on GAAGo, but people in Britain couldn't watch a number of key Championship games on GAAGo, and had to fork out for Sky Sports for those games (at no small cost). Today's announcement means that everyone outside Ireland (including those in Britain) can watch all league & championship games live on GAAGo for €120/year, which is a big saving for viewers in Britain versus today's need for both GAAGo and Sky. The move away from Sky is a step in the right direction in looking after Gaels over in Britain, rather than forcing Sky Sports on them (which always seemed to be about securing passing praise from random C-list celebs who stumbled across it for 5 minutes on Sky).

Only it will cost alot more. I thought Sky's coverage was very good. Better camera work and better pundits. GAAGO is actually pretty poor quality. TG4 best of the rest. RTE is like watching amateur hour and has only got worse as time has gone on.

They'll have to up their game big time on GAAGO, have more than just co-comm's. have a halt time panel etc. and god forbid more than 1 camera angle.

Yet they dont show any live english soccer. do they? And they show very little rugby as well. have lost some of their 6 nations rights. show 8 european cup games a year and a small number of URC games.

You could watch the Sky games in rest of world anyway.
Moving from sky isnt in right direction if its only games on an online platform only compared to a tv station
