Brian Mullins RIP

I've two good stories about Brian. Ine us about his toughness and the other about his sportsmanship. 1.In a game against a northern team maybe an interorovincial John Mccarthy got poleaxed (James s Dad and a tough boyo himself). The culprit said to John "You just got hit by the hardest wee man in Ulster". Later Mullins poleaxed the culprit who was stretchered off the field. John Mccarthy went over to the now victim and said "You just got hit by the biggest hard man in Leinster". I read that in Tom Humphries book about Dublin /Kerry. 2.I heard this story from home in Kerry that came from Óige Moran. Not sure was in 75 or 78 (probably 78 as Ogie was captain) but Ogie and Brian were good friends. When the final whistle went between Ogie s delight and Brian s disappointment they did nt skake hands. A couple of hours late the Kerry players and supporters were celebrating drinking a few pints in Barry s Hotel when big Brian struggled through the Kerry crowd in Barry's until he found Ogie. Tapping Ogie on the shoulder he said to Ogie"i never got to shake hands with you after the match and congratulate you so I decided to make my way here to congratulate you. Brian must have been devastated but still did that lovely gesture. Ogie never forgot. Now that is sportsmanship. Rest easy big man. A true Legend.

Good man Mick, love these stories. I'd heard the one about McCarthy and the Nordie before. I'd never hear the one about Ogie. Enjoyed it.

Thanks Forever. The first story was in a book. The second story came from a relation of Ogie.

A great man, one that will be remembered and celebrated.

Played a big part in my favourite Dublin goal of all time, played a big part on what is still the greatest Dubs team of all time in the eyes of many.

Watch from about 13.25 if you get a chance

What a game this was.. the replay gets all the plaudits but this one was a far better game

I spoke to Barney Rock about this goal a few years back, told him it was my favourite Dub goal of all time and said the highlights was on YouTube, Barney of course plays it down, "I'll give that a watch alright, AHH I couldn't miss" he says..

He finishes it superbly well and the way the hill reacts..

Michael O'Hehir:
"Ooohh look at the Hill"

He knew more than most that such a moment and view deserved to be highlighted

Great men

RIP Brian Mullins

Very sad.

Sad when I heard Brian Mullins passed, one of my favorite non Meath players. Watching old matches on TG4 he was some player. When interviewed he always seemed very down to earth, honest and never went over the top with praise or criticism.

Brian Mullins was a towering midfielder and an iconic player. He and the late Anton O'Toole were the only Dublin players to win four senior All-Ireland medals in that era. The Dublin players of the 1970s left a legacy and Brian Mullins was an inspirational part of it. Go dtuga Dia solas na bhFlaitheas dá anam uasal.

RIP Brian Mullins.
When the '74 team brought the cup around to my primary school it was one of the best days.

On another note, I don't like these so called "hard man" stories about ex-player etc. I've heard multiple versions of the one quoted above. They always leave a sour taste for me, and in this context it is using a great man to make a typical anti-Ulster dig. I don't think I ever heard Mullins boasting about stuff like this and I'm not sure Tom Humphries deserves to be cited in a post about anyone ever. Mullins recover from his accident tells you all about how tough he was. Everything beside that pales into insignificance.

A better idea of who Brian Mullins was is on the GAA website,

Highlights of the Dubs 1983 run

Crazy year and up there as the most drama filled Dub All Ireland win right across the run, replays, last minute goals, dominant displays and then winning an AI with 12 men

Again these men deserve to be remembered and celebrated, no more than Brian Mullins, so I'll just share another clip if you'd care to have a look

It was only yesterday, with a visit from some of the extended clan over, that I actually realized how really magnanimous a man the late Brian Mullins was. Talking about all things GAA, as one happens to do, since their last visit, a 15-year-old 3rd cousin showed me a You-Tube clip.

I'd never seen this Laochra Gael video before, and had I, I would not have even understood what Mullins said about Jacko, as Mullins spoke only 'as Gaeilge'. When the 15-year-old translated to me what was being said, I almost cried.

Kudos to both men. It really shows how much they appreciated each other and respected each other, both on and off the field.

I also love what Jacko has to say about the late, great Heffo.
