A fantastic performance from the lads on sat evening, we had to and did put in a full 70mins plus performance. Management deserve great credit for set up as in the league game we tried to compete at midfield which left us exposed at the back when we lost ball around the middle, letting Cavan have the ball stopped them putting ball in early and they were forced to shoot from distance. The pace we have in this team is unreal players just bursting a gut to get up and support and lads beating they're men at ease coming out of defence really took pressure off. I for one was not surprised at this result as we have players really on top form and lads coming back from injuries at the right time, honestly ever player played there part, we have a very smart management team and smart players who will only improve. Super result Saturday. It's a definite mark of progress. Credit to the management team and all the players for turning things around this year. Let's hope this trajectory continues and this group can stay together over the coming years. There's the nucleus of a bright young team there with the potential to drive Down forward. When I think of '96 the whinging and moaning that went on in Mayo was worse than the defeat, blaming everyone except ourselves. Thankfully we seem to have become better losers since those days! Is there much of a buzz back home for the Tailteann? Would have worries about this one. The odds are crazy to have Down 4/9 v Meath 7/4......while Down have definitely shown big improvements Meath are the Div.2 team and will be licking there lips at been made underdogs......the 8 goals v Laois have really skewed perceptions out there (Laois defending was very poor and ultimately a Div.4 team).....Down will still need to pull off their best performance to get over this one. I think Colm O'Rourke has always had a sore spot over Down defeating Meath in '91 so no shortage of motivation from that camp.....I'm sure Laverty and the backroom team will have the squad well prerpared mentally.....looking forward to it. Could be a cracker. Hoping for a repeat of '91 and another step forward for this group....a lot riding on this as will be tough to make the Sam Maguire next year via any other route...... Very disappointing from Down, never got going in the 2nd half. Meath went for the jugular and it paid off. A certain player should focus more on the game itself rather than keeping his socks taped up. Great start by Down, decision making was excellent taking their points and seeming to dominate. The goal seemed to take the wind out of their sails, they never got back on track. Meath according to commentators looked stronger and fitter which is to be expected of a Division Two team. Down who usually finish strongly in the last twenty minutes were completely run off their feet. I don't know why, is the fitness that takes years to build up not there yet, or did the occasion get to the team. Meath showed more maturity, didn't panic or force things the way Down ended up doing. Meath were deserved winners on the day. Down seemed to be set up very deep, with too many men behind the ball and every time I heard that Pat Havern was working away in defence I thought this set up is wrong. There was no sign of Downs strengths pace and running. Disappointing ending to an overall very good season where the highs out weighed the lows. While there were highlights, Donegal, Cavan and Laois come to mind, to describe it as a very good season is just nonsense. We failed to secure Sam Maguire football, coming up short in the league and the secondary comp. We missed the key objective.
