Fixture Changes For 2023

(Oldest Posts First)

Reports suggest that the National Football League will have no finals next year. The Sam Maguire and Tailteann group games will be played over three consecutive weekends. The All-Ireland Football final will be played one week later than this year.
The Munster and Leinster hurling finals could be played on the same day. The McDonagh final and U20 hurling final could be played on the same day, possibly two weeks before the provincial hurling finals.

Ending League Finals for football has been put down for the CC to consider.
Hurling will still have League Finals!

The Allianz football finals will go ahead next year. The GPA and Kerry were among those in favour of retaining the league finals. Lower league counties could be in provincial action only a week after a league final.
The hurling and football All-Ireland finals will be a week later next year. The hurling and football league finals will be on the same weekend of April 1/2. The Munster and Leinster provincial hurling finals will be on June 11.
The report didn't mention the McDonagh final. The suggestion during the week is that the McDonagh final could be May 27/28. That should allow the McDonagh finalists 2 or 3 weeks to prepare for the preliminary quarter-finals.

Good decision, team that finishes top always should win.

That's the way it should be with any league, you finish top you win, I think it's a mistake too having the All Ireland over so early.

Yes. Really enjoyed listening to people on Radio na Gaeltachta during week talking about Donegal winning in 1992 - 30 years ago!! - despite the reminder of the pain and significant financial hit.

Reminded me of how much the championship finals were a set part of the nation. Just not the same having it all over two months previously. It has left a gap.

And before anyone mentions the club i do see the benefits but judging by crowds here in Dublin and watching on TV from other counties, the club games are not attracting big crowds, whatever about the calendar better suiting intercounty seniors.

It leaves the league a bit flat. A team could have the league won with 2 games to play.

The Central Council yesterday decided to keep the League Finals.

There's no particular reason at all why that should be the case and especially so in a small single-round league where not all teams have the same number of home and away matches. There are many examples around the world where even in leagues where teams play far more matches, a final or finals series is played. The AFL in Australia being one example, similarly the leagues in all American sports, soccer's Champions League and many rugby leagues. There are also promotion play-offs in the English soccer leagues which don't respect the points accumulated by the teams involved over a very long season.

Yes that is correct. Baseball after 160 games has play offs. Ice hockey has play offs after 80 games and so on. In fact our own hurling and football championships are now a league with qualifiers. However with the shades down we don't see that.

The GPA were in favour of retaining the finals. Cavan had two Croke Park games last year. With the Tailteann Cup, lower league counties have more opportunity of playing in Croke Park in the hunt for league and championship titles.

Its strange that so many people who want to abolish the provincial championship was saying the league finals should be kept as it gives teams a chance to play in a final/win a cup/play in Croke Park. Basically it gives teams a chance of a trophy. Thats been my point for years about the provincial cships.
