Interested to see what way the underdogs get on. Has a good standard of hurler actually applied for this and will they actually put up a good showing? Felt like the new football reboot wasn't great and the standard was pretty poor, was more about sob stories and all that, not taking a dig at those lads but it seemed to be more about creating TV sob moments than unearthing hidden gems of players. The original series seemed fo attract a higher standard of player, maybe good club hurlers don't want to be missing out on their own club training or something Throughthemidfieldhewasstormin (Wexford) - Posts: 286 - 16/09/2022 16:11:00 2440904 Link 1 |
Watch it last night. Definitely lads with big ideas about themselves. The lad from Leitrim I think being one. Didn't get picked basically made them give him a second chance wasn't picked again and still wasn't happy. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1487 - 16/09/2022 16:22:59 2440907 Link 0 |
I'd say with the commitment levels now with clubs hard for lads to juggle, didn't see the show last night but was reading Jerry Kelly from Borrisoleigh is on it, surprised he never got a run with Tipp, played Fitzgibbon this year with IT Carlow, Gorey's Tom Stafford flying the Wexford flag I believe.

Looks to be much of the same this year. A well known club hurler in Galway was sent home, and by the looks of the some of the lads that were kept, they're there for the sob story or the Gaeilge maybe… does anybody know who they're playing? A decent senior club team would have beaten any of the football teams in years gone by, same way with the ladies team. It's unfortunate it doesn't get the proper buy in to discover an unknown gem but realistically any guy playing a decent standard with his club isn't going to be allowed by his club to be going playing that. Don't get me wrong, it's a great show in theory but doesn't work in practice. There won't be any Kieran Donaghy I don't think..

Didn't see the football one, but I'd imagine you're right and that's how things are nowadays - click-bait moments that resonate with a general audience as opposed to a straightforward unearthing of overlooked club talent

The footballing equivalent even lost to an intermediate club football team at one stage. Guess it's more about making some TV moments rather than finding some gems. Pity because it is actually a great concept. Some of the last underdogs hurling team even made it on to county panels after. Niall Corcoran probably the most notable. Michael Grace got a few runs with Kilkenny after as well and few more lads got onto panels at various stages. Davy Canning, Joe's brother, as well was a very integral part of one of the best club teams of all time.

I'd love to see the rawness of the first season of lads who really feel hard done by not being included on county panels. People with a point to prove not just those who have a good backstory. bountyboy22 (USA) - Posts: 41 - 20/09/2022 14:51:39 2441320 Link 0 |
In the modern game in both codes very few lads slip through the cracks and aren't seen. Didn't see the ladies one last year and not sure how it worked. But in the two football ones you'd lads who weren't even starting for their clubs on the starting team. Sending lads out to be hammered by a county third choice team is not benefiting anyone. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1487 - 23/09/2022 08:49:29 2441604 Link 0 |

God forbid a lad wouldn't be allowed be disappointed not being picked.... anyhow we dont all have JP's writing the cheques.... you'd probably be looking for "oxymorons" yourself if he wasnt....

There's being disappointed with not being picked and waiting change after change and going off in a sulk when you don't get that. He shouldn't have been given the second chance anyway.

The Robert O'Donnell seems like a very good hurler and probably the best of the underdogs. He doesn't seem to be hurling with his club at all then. Interesting fella, seems honest, likeable sort of a lad Throughthemidfieldhewasstormin (Wexford) - Posts: 286 - 07/10/2022 19:13:38 2443157 Link 0 |
I think it said he was on the Limerick panel at some stage. Says he lives in Dingle as well so that might have something to do with it.

With gaelic games in mind what is the definition of the word "Underdogs," in your opinion are players nominated / selected and teams put together because the qualify as underdogs, for what it's worth the selection of underdog players is per usual political, for want of a better word. I take your word that you are from a weaker county it's just that I am finding it hard to believe, I am from a weaker county and I have no problem showing my colors even though I live far from it. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3084 - 08/10/2022 09:11:27 2443166 Link 1 |

Dont knock this competition as it might be the only win we get this year LOL. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2903 - 20/10/2022 22:00:29 2444864 Link 0 |
The definitely look a lot better than the team that got hammered by Raharney the first day. Probably having full access to lads who's clubs are knocked out helps. Still think they'll get an awful hammering from Waterfords 2nd or 3rd team. Looked like they could be a middle of the road senior club team after seeing them beat Oulart who won intermediate in Wexford this year. Even getting to that level is decent going. Maybe playing the all Ireland club champions or the Joe McDonagh winners would make the game more competitive just because of the level intercounty hurling has gone to at Liam McCarthy level in a physical way. Wish them the best of luck, still a great opportunity and experiences for the lads who did it. Throughthemidfieldhewasstormin (Wexford) - Posts: 286 - 21/10/2022 10:47:07 2444892 Link 0 |
