I love the mark, thought Cliffords fielding was one of the highlights of the final. Its one of the great skills of the game and deserves to be rewarded. Without the mark he would have been surrounded by opposition and eventually would have conceded a free out.

Simple rule change…. Get rid of the mark and if a player catches the ball and a 3rd tackler comes in he immediately gets the free… This would mean more keenly contested fielding instead of letting a guy catch it and then surround him leading to a free out… That sort of thing drives players and supporters mad..and turns them against referees… Getting a free for catching a ball is just plain silly…..

Agree totally. Before the mark, the skill of high fetching was often penalised rather than rewarded.

If getting a free for catching the ball is silly then surely preventing the opposition from effectively tackling a player for catching the ball is also silly?
And you don't need to tackle the player, just surround him, he'll eventually over carry and you'll still get your free out.

where is the high fielding when a corner forward gets a ball into his chest and calls a mark?

Fair point but the mark, I assume, was brought into to stop the great art of high fielding from being eradicated from the game, (as an above poster mentioned, high fielding was effectively being punished under the old rules).
If every now and then the rule means a corner back can call a mark, which I admit isn't totally ideal, then so be it.
I'd imagine the mark has also helped encourage teams to use the kick more too.

Said it before, even when Mc Shane played a blinder v Dublin a few years back, rotten rule. Clifford doesn't even need to take marks he's that good but it's a handy option. It's making the game too simple for forward's.

Only have the mark for catching the ball over the the head. Awarding a mark for a lad catching the ball into the chest is crazy.
Either that or only retain it from kick outs to stop certain team employing their usual tactics.

I agree. The skills of the game have been eroded in the name of one thing or another. You always had high fielders but that had to be combined with the skill to do something constructive with the ball once you got it.
Keep the black card, if you wish, but get rid of the sin bin. The referee on Sunday did not issue a black card to a goalie and rule or no rule, used his judgement, and just awarded a free. The foul was not malicious, dangerous, and no harm done. Most modern day refs would have gone by the book. He is to be commended for that. All fouls are committed to prevent the other having an advantage.
A bigger gripe with me is free kicks from the hand. Was brought in by the scholastic minds in Croke Park "to speed up the game". This one is a laugh.

I like the mark from the kick out but can't stand the advance mark. Ruins the game for me

What would be the point of a black card if there was no sin bin?
