Its Time The GAA Took On The USA Money Bags Before Football Turns Professional

Tomsmith Cavan here

I see that the exodes of GAA players leaving Clubs to go and play in the US has really flourished this year.
While I have no hard evidence to the contrary I have to say I find it hard to believe that these players just go to the US for the love of the game.
I feel that the people running clubs in the US where transfers from Ireland take place ( some clubs have only a set of Jerseys) should not be allowed to have any transfers if the do not have an underage structure. I understand that some big businesses just buy in players for the season.

What planet are you on?
This is going on since 1884.
Young lads are entitled to a bit of fun and a few quid for a summer or 2

Is there really more of an exodus than normal does anyone know?

There are a couple of factors in that lads have been locked away for 2 years and are taking the opportunity to travel a bit when given the opportunity.

The second factor is a little different!

If there is a bigger exodus than normal are these players then just effectively abandoning their clubs and club championships? We have gone to great pains to restructure an entire GAA calendar for the benefit of the Club player to play championship in summer months so if it looks like we have done all this and that opportunity is not being availed off then whats the point?

If its a case of restructuring the calendar to enable lads to have a jolly in the US and still play Club championship when they always would have anyway it makes a mockery of the whole thing.

Taking aside the AI finalists in both codes i would presume all other championships are well up and running at this stage?

Mayo, Armagh and I think Tyrone are only starting in September!
Ros weekend 6/7 August.

As for the Chicago semi pro thing....whatever happened to the Sacred Amateur Ethos of the GAA?

Always like when tomsmith appears.
While this is going on since day 0, it is a problem in plenty of counties that club championships are being held up because of it.
It is either time for the GAA to make a rule that you choose 1 or the other in any given year, or else the GAA HQ has to force counties to start their club championships regardless of whether players are in the states or not.

I heard of one player getting $15,000/$16000 for the Summer not even a huge profile player so I suppose its hard to blame them a student if his County is finished gets Rent free in NY for 3/4 Months a nice few quid to perhaps buy a car and has the "craic" as well out there.

Louth championships are not starting until late August. The leagues are being played to a conclusion first.

Big Mayo contingent playing for McBride's in Chicago at the moment.

Wouldn't have a huge issue with it given that the county championships here don't get going til September (you'd have to wonder why it takes so long, given that we all knew that county would be done in July?). Remember, these young lads give up most of their leisure time for our entertainment, and all they get is a tracksuit or a few pairs of boots for it.

If they can make a few bob and enjoy themselves in one of the best cities in the world (and ideally be back for the club championships) then more power to them. I played GAA abroad for a few years (no cash for me though!) and it was a great experience.

It is an excellent way for any young man or woman to spend a summer regardless of financial compensation.
We can get quite caught up in our own importance when it comes to the GAA and the club. Yes of course it is a fantastic part of being Irish, representing your parish proudly, and it instils a great sense of belonging and pride. But there is a big world out there and the best years of your life go by in a flash. I would encourage any youngster who gets the chance to go to grab it with both hands. The club will still be there when you get home.

The thing I learned most from my J1 experience was the hard work that Irish (and indeed other diaspora) have to put in to make it in the US. It's not all glitz and glamour. You need to work damn hard and have a thick skin to get by. Invaluable life lessons for any kid.

Tomsmith here

What I am referring to is that money Bags in the USA use the Gaa to buy in a team and it improves ones business .
if one wins the NY , Boston, Chicago, PA or SF titles one has ahigh profile
I feel that they club that trained these fellows in Ireland should get the money that is offered.
These money Bags do nothing for the GAA,
How many teams have any underage structure, the answer is very few.
If any player wants to play for money.. join that other merry go round round ball outfit..
The GAA is an amateur sport and was never intended that it could be used for financial gain

If young lads are heading to the States and making a few quid at the same time, then more power to them!

I think it's time we dropped this concept of thinking GAA clubs hold some degree of ownership over young lads (masked as outrage at clubs in the USA, and AFL clubs for that matter). We don't see GAA people directing their anger at companies based overseas any time a young person is offered job, and subsequently has to migrate. If lads are around, they'll likely play. If not, it's not the end of the world. There's more to life than keeping young lads to play football.

Indeed. I was in Canada for a spell once and an old time immigrant said to me, "It may well be the land of milk and honey, but no one tells you you have to go out and farm them yourself!"

Self-reliance and hard work are two important concepts and one really learns about them when you're away, only relying on yourself, no network of friends and family or a social welfare net to fall back on.

Ireland is a small island ultimately and travel usually broadens the mind. Football and hurling are great and all but no one should feel overly obliged to any GAA club back home given that we're all ultimately volunteers. Plenty of time to anchor oneself to a club back home once a spouse, kids and perhaps a mortgage arrive.

Like other counties Down championship starts in sept, nobody's championship is being held up over lads in America.
This is going to be the normal now every year when counties knocked out of the All Ireland, head to the states play a bit of ball especially with lads you would be playing against now your team mates, making friends, having a laugh and seeing something new.
All these lads will be back soon getting ready for there clubs when championship starts.

I think it's great for the lads who have went over, travelling and a bit of football over the summer, why wouldn't they go! However, and I commented on it here myself at the time split season was being discussed, all inter county players love their clubs, that is where it started but they're the elite of our games.

The new dates was always going to open a clear window for these players to take time to themselves, and play football at clubs who want to promote the game in the US and have the elite stars for 6 weeks! Many were not going to run back to their clubs straight away despite the arguments.

A number have went this year, they'll return with stories and it's clear the percentage of players going next year when they're hear what it's like will increase and so on.

I support it, but the issue is does the GAA in Ireland have to run such a quick intercounty championship for the benefit of clubs, when evidence might show a number of inter county players aren't returning to the clubs straight away, with individual club championships starting at the same time they always started anyway? Is there then space to extend the inter county calender to iron out some of the small flaws we seen this year?

Why should any championship be held up over a handful of players?

I wouldn't begrudge any player either the money or the experience of playing in New York. I did it one summer under a name of some lad I never heard of!

But, it flies in the face of the GAA trying to create a set calendar and a structure for the club player if the clubs arent starting their championship until September.

We have spent Sunday after Sunday listening to pundits looking after their own turf talking about the condensed season and if the GAA see a chance to put the AI final back to September, this will give them the ammo they need.

90% of inter county players care massively about their club. 10% care not one bit about them and once the inter county season ends don't care remotely about the club. The 90% should be facilitated, the 10% aren't worth worrying about.

In Wexford, the hurling championships are at the quarter finals this weekend and in 4 weeks the football will start. Maybe it is easier if you have only one code to play seriously, where there is less pressure on fixtures?

I went to Australia in the 90's and played Aussie Rules and even tried my hand at cricket. Both were great fun, competitive but I made some great friends from Australia, UK and India. Some of which I'm still in contact to this day with. It is beyond me why some young Irish man would go off to the US and play an Irish game, hang out with Irish people for 3 months and land home. The world has a bit more to offer than hurling and football.
