Decent enough reason for winning it. Would Kerry have won Sunday without Clifford? Lost to Tyrone in extra time last year and Clifford played no part in those 20 minutes.

Clifford is a media darling now and good luck to him - seems like a good lad and is an immense talent but Shane Walsh was absolutely MOTM in AI final. His performance was outrageous. Clifford amazing too but not as good as Walsh on the particular day. Clifford has Walsh on high fielding and height. Walsh has him on pretty much every other front - more skilled, better balanced on both sides, quicker and more. Clifford seems to have a bit more venom, a savage will to win though - and that goes a long way. Two greats. I think there has been other man of the matches playing for the defeated team, the last few seasons as well, Keegan springs to mind for Mayo. If, as I suspect the unwritten criteria is, motm has to be on the winning team, then the GAA should present motm prior to presenting the cup to the winning team post game. Announce the winner, and let the player walk up the steps of the Hogan, difficult enough if you've lost the game but if you're motm you deserve the reward. For me Clifford is ahead of Walsh…. I'd agree with this. Canavan in '95 was one of the most obvious. He was head and shoulders above anyone on the pitch that day.

Overall, I'd agree, but the question was about Sunday's performances. They're very different types of players. Walsh plays much deeper. He carries the ball and runs at players at pace. He has an ability to go either side at pace like no other player I've seen. He then has the ability to kick off either side from distance while running at pace. A point he scored against Mayo in the 2020 Connacht Final was a great example. He got the ball well inside his own 45 out near the sideline, then took off past a midfielder with Lee Keegan for company too. He ran about 60m turned Keegan inside out 3 times, cut inside and curled it over from distance. Clifford can't do that, but of course he doesn't need to. He's a brilliant target man, ball winner and one of the best finishers I've ever seen. He's also a very clever player, which is something that doesn't get mentioned enough. They have different attributes. It was well worth the €90 on Sunday to see both of them show what they can do on the biggest occasion.
