With no fans being allowed on the pitch in Croke Park should the presentation be in the middle of the pitch??

Ah no. I hear you but you can't climb the steps of Hogan Stand to collect Liam McCarthy or Sam Maguire if it's in the middle of the pitch. I'll remain old fashioned but the forlorn dream of us ever lifting Sam doesn't include a lad stepping from the Croke Park grass to the kerb of some synthetic platform to collect that great trophy from Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael in a Champions League style presentation. It'll be him lifting the cup looking down towards his teammates delirious teammates on the great steps on the left with a mighty speech paying tribute to the selectors and manager on the pitch. It's a recurring dream!

I'd leave it up to the players. It's their day, their moment. It's been tried from the pitch in the past but the feedback seemed to be that climbing the Hogan steps is a part of that dream for many. The likes of Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett spoke of its importance after winning in 2010 I believe.

Didn't they do this around 20 years ago? I seem to recall Cork Hurlers and Meath Footballers being presented with the trophies on the pitch in 1999. Not sure if this was due to the construction work going on in Croke Park at the time but don't think it looks as good as the standard Hoganstand presentation myself...

I think up in the Hogan is the best, I wasn't a fan of it in the middle of the pitch. I just wish they'd get rid of speeches,

Or at least give the winning captain more leeway to express himself. GAA speeches are atrocious, the endless thanking is v boring imo.

I'd agree about the speeches. The only things not thanked are the water bottles. Take the cup and hoist it saying thank you. Go back to the field, lapping it and indulging your fans.

What's worse is the losing team having to stand there listening to it all. I say 'have to', when I suppose they could just leave the field and go straight to the changing room, where most, if not all, of them would want to be.

I remember Mark Landers getting the cup on the field in 1999. It just didn't seem right.

With regards to speeches though - I have to disagree. Fair enough lots of thanking but those people who are thanked need to be thanked. An inspirational speech is memorable to the fans of the winners. I think of Anthony Daly's speeches in 95 & 97, John Connolly's speech in 1980, Declan Hannon's in 2018. Ciaran McGeeney 2002, Peter Canavan 2003.

These are moments in GAA history that are golden. Plus they are optional - you can leave the ground or go to the shop. If you're at home you can switch off the TV or make a cuppa. The speech process lasts 5 minutes tops.

I long for the day the Mayo footballers win Sam because the speech and everything around the occasion will be special even if the game finishes scoreless and goes to penalties.........

They definitely were fantastic speeches, and Shane Walsh gave a fantastic speech after Tullaroan won the All Ireland Intermediate club hurling title a couple of years back. But speeches like the ones mentioned are very rare. I also think players and backroom staff should be given their medals on the day and then the cup.

John the cups were presented on the field for a few years between 1999 and 2001 as the hoganstand was being built and was nt ready. It was nt the same imo.

The 1980 acceptance speech, after the hurling All-Ireland, by John Connolly, completely in Irish, and Joe McDonagh's rendering of "The West's awake", would have not happened if the acceptance ceremony was curtailed.
A classic. Should be a "must watch" for all captains.

Yes I would love to hear winning speeches from winning Waterford hurling and Mayo football captain's in the future.Also Kildare and Cavan winning captain's.

Fair enough lads. I was at Galway Derry and the presentation for the Westmeath time was on. Could see nothing from the Cusack. I accept it probably looks better in the stand on TV

Yes graham geraghty got Sam on a podium in the centre of field in 1999.

Fully agree, sometimes there is waffle but the backroom team deserve their mention, you don't have to listen if you don't want to, and agree that Joe Connolly's speech especially was a legendary one. And it has to be in the Hogan surrounded by teams mates and fans.
