Colm O'rourke

Replying To royaldunne:  "Indeed. Well 3 Leinster minor titles in last number of years and one all Ireland title at same grade would suggest the talent is coming through. But for first couple of years he will have to do what Andy did before him and just keep things steady. The Meath supporters are very impatient. But really this is just a holding exercise for Colm and his back room team (who if rumours are right is very impressive) until those players arrive on senior scene. The talent that is coming through is serious, and more of them will commit to remaining in football knowing Colm is the senior manager. A v good appointment. But we must be patient. I'm sure Colm will judge that only a all Ireland will do in his tenure. But there's a lot of turns in that road before we reach the promised land."
He'll certainly bring an edge, best of luck to him.

Admire him for taking it on. Best of luck. Albeit they said no I think pat spillane put his name forward for the kerry u 21 post a few times. That's two of the old guard.
Maybe time for Brolly to get off the armchair?

I think the main issue for Meath is the lack of players at the level needed. Most of the minors are probably 2 years off making the step up.
He'll be full of passion no doubt and wants the best for Meath but I think inter-county management might have passed him at this stage. A bit like Glen with us.

I'd expect to see a very traditional man to man Meath side after years of TV and newspaper rants about the standard of the game and how modern tactics were a curse on the game etc etc. Plenty of inside knowledge about Meath football no doubt, but the jury is still out on whether or not he can cut it in the current elite intercounty circuit. But best of luck to him anyway.

Well those are the rumours. Apparently fitzmorris went for interview but explained the drive etc was too much to do on full time basis. But he'd be happy to be part of a set up.

Replying To Onion Breath:  "Interesting and surprising choice for me. Really will be interesting. Surely his time was 25 years ago though. Fair play to him for taking it now. No doubting his passion for Meath but he must regret not getting it after Boylan. Has plenty of coaching experience I know but inter county in this era and at the top end of the game where he'll want Meath to be is a different planet. Meath will kick the ball plenty I'm sure and he'll give an opportunity to some hardy fellas who like a manly game of football. Will need someone astute to lead the tactical approach though. Just can't see that there's a breakthrough coming for Meath though but at 65 he probably feels he can't leave it behind him now and has to take it on."
Yeah, from media and from what he said on the Sunday Game it looks like the county board approached him, rather than him applying again, and he felt he couldn't turn them down. I think he'll improve Meath but he's taking on a county with unrealistic expectations and I don't see any breakthrough coming either.

He'll also likely be far more dignified on the sideline too

Yes a surprising but interesting choice at this stage of his life. Last played for Meath 28 seasons ago so the current panel of players will know him as a pundit instead of the inspiring player he was. Managing a county is a big step up from club and colleges football but it's where most successful managers begin, just wish he got an opportunity after Boylan stepped down. Colm is an intelligent man and a high profile appointment so it might encourage young talent to come through and maybe tempt some good players who left the panel to return to the fold again. I wish him well and it would be great to see the Royals competing for titles again.

Why would anyone want the grief I wonder, but Meath have a big population is predominately Football and have a bit of tradition so he can definitely improve them.

Always very hard to win an all Ireland but Tyrone have proven that if you have your ducks in a row it can happen

Best of Luck to him was a good pundit IMO

He is setting himself up for a huge fall here I feel. He needs to set realistic targets. Obviously Division status and then retaining it are the obvious ones along with getting to the quarter finals in the championship regularly. But beating Dublin? I'd have though he was a little more savvy than that to be honest. Kildare are miles behind Dublin but a little bit ahead of Meath.

Yeah, I'm not trying to be nasty to a great football county, but with the way things are now, I'd imagine a more realistic target is to simply keep things respectable against the dubs.
Victory over them anytime soon is almost inconceivable imo, much as I'd love to see a competitive leinster championship.

Sure why would you take it to keep things as they are ? what about ambition nobody can match Dublin for population base but you have to have winning Leinster & All Ireland as your target for county like Meath its will take time but Colm will definitely start the process
