Hard luck Dublin. I don't think anyone would have beaten Cork the way they played today. They'll be tough in the Final. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2592 - 06/07/2025 03:03:47 2623847 Link 0 |
Gutted by that now, I said I didn't know which of the 3 results would happen but the one I feared most was the one that happened. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1429 - 06/07/2025 13:08:16 2623890 Link 0 |
Dublin will absolutely nothing until the day comes when they have all the top hurlers in the county playing for the county. All the top counties have all the top players playing for them and Dublin are constantly handicapped because of this.

They are, but that is a problem since Adam was a boy.

Who get who sent off? Crummey's tackle was a very poor one, in fact it wasn't a tackle, not in any coaching manual to stick an elbow towards or into an opponent's head. Surprised they even appealed it, stone wall red card and anyone who thinks otherwise is in a tiny minority

I think having Chris, Danny and EOD will make a massive difference when playing the TOP teams next year. Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 4448 - 06/07/2025 13:47:12 2623901 Link 0 |
I think you'll find that's an issue in loads of counties

Sutcliffe's not getting any younger, but definitely EOD would make a massive difference, he'd make most county teams

Not a chance he'd be on Tipp, Limerick, Cork or Kilkenny side, definitely not now. His commitment has been questionable

Do Cork, Kilkenny, Limerick, Wexford, Tipperary, Clare, Waterford, Galway have many top hurlers opting for the footballers?

A sickening day yesterday tbh.Firstly I was surrounded by Langers. Boy do they like the sound of their own voices.I had one lad telling me while eating his sangwedge how the 4 week break is going to kill Cork boy and afterwards saying we were unlucky to meet a Cork team that are flying. He then says sure you can shout for Cork in the final. No way Mister Langer. Our support was very poor yesterday and we were outnumbered 7 to 1 with a guess. Where are the great supporters that are able to go when the footballers doing great? Sorry lads but im pissed off. Last time I checked Croke park was in Drumcondra Dublin and our support was dire.I really felt for the hurlers and it made me realise alot of our supporters our as false as a toupee. The support for the footballers has waned too since we went down a notch. brayballer (Wicklow) - Posts: 203 - 06/07/2025 18:53:21 2623967 Link 2 |
Dáithí plays football for Corofin and hurling for the county. Comer could have been a handy hurler but opted for the football. Imagine those two on the same team!

The langer beside me saying that Dublin gaa should show the tape of the match to every Dublin schoolkid and thats how they see the real skills. oh ffs man. I nearly got sick. Would love if Tipp won final.

My own club would be the largest in Wexford at underage but have a huge exodus from juvenile to minor for soccer. Wexford is somewhat unique in that we're a proper dual county. Most of our adult players would play both codes, and it's very often the case that the best hurlers are also the best footballers, not to mention to club schedule being half football is detrimental to their hurling because they're only doing it half the time. I don't think Kilkenny, Waterford, Tipp etc. are like this. Galway and Cork are proper dual counties too but with much larger playing numbers. Our most successful club historically doesn't seem interested in the county team at all. Football isn't the only reason some of your top hurlers may not want to be involved with the county team. I am saying that particular problem is not unique to Dublin. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3823 - 07/07/2025 15:01:32 2624161 Link 1 |
Go to a Limerick or Cork football match (or Donegal/Kerry hurling match) and youll see the same or worse low level of support that our Hurlers get. It was a bad day but overall it was a good year for Dublin hurling - Na Fianna winning the club All Ireland and NO'C getting to an All Ireland semi final in his first season. Most of the Galway hurlers geographically come from South and East Gakway, from areas where there are usually no football clubs of senior or intermediate standard, so opting for football wouldn't even be an option for them. Football owns the North and West of Galway, largely to the complete exclusion of top notch hurling clubs. Where the hurling South/East region borders the football North/West, you'll get a handful of quality dual players trying their hand at both to senior/ intermediate standard......if they've time. Areas like Monivea/Abbey, Menlough/Skehana/Mountbellew, Ballygar, Turloughmore/Carnmore/Claregalway, Ahascragh/Caltra, Athenry, Ballinasloe until it flagged badly in both codes for the last 30 years, options too in and around Galway City to be a dual star one would imagine. I can't think of any top hurler opting to be a footballer since Alan Kerins came within a game of winning the Teddy McCarthy double in 2001, and subsequently won club all irelands in both codes with geographically distanced Clarinbridge and Salthill. He didn't give up hurling to make that football move though. McDaid might be the closest we have to 'a hurler' opting for football. He was a minor hurling all Ireland winner i think. To cut a long story short, and to answer your question re. Galway.....not many. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 4306 - 10/07/2025 19:37:15 2624888 Link 0 |
I understand Jack Glynn was an excellent hurler too. The truth is there are plenty hurlers who would have been top footballers and vice versa, but they just happened to be from areas and clubs who focused on one code primarily, so their focus was on that once they reached their late teens. Daniel O'Flaherty and Cathal Sweeney from Salthill were excellent underage hurlers. They obviously weren't playing with a strong hurling club and football naturally became the main focus. The Mannion brothers are very good footballers when playing for Caltra. If that was their sole focus from a young age, there's a good chance they would have reached a very high standard. As I said before, if the Connolly's father hadn't gotten sick and the family stayed in Leitir Móir, they never would have picked up a hurl, much to the detriment of Galway hurling. Even at club level, it's getting more difficult to be a dual player now, without feeling like at least one or both is suffering.
