Luckily, referee mistakes don't usually affect the outcome of games. Unfortunately in this game it changed everything. The free-out for Offaly, which the referee ignored surely would have given Offaly the necessary momentum to fall over the finishing line. It has now become commonplace for the team with 14 players to re-set, have a mental chat with themselves and switch to turbo-charge. The greatest example in our time, was the victory of Dublin against Galway in the 1983 All Ireland Football Final with 12 players against Galway's 14.
It now seems to be acceptable in hurling to take the shortest route to goal and invite a high tackle. Referees, in general only blow for over-stepping. Everything else is fair game ! Maybe, somebody might explain how a hurling defender should deploy himself in trying to tackle a rampaging attacker, without conceding another handy free.

Gutted for Offaly. Heartbreaking to lose in that manner. Blatant free out at the end ignored by the ref, who was standing right beside it, for reasons beknownst only to himself. I saw a replay of the foul, and the ref shakes his head as the player is tripped by the Tipp forward! So he definitely saw it and presumably thought "nah, fair trip, play on"!

Tipp poster not happy with my description of corner forward's behaviour, he committed three red card offences in one incident, flaked Offaly lad twice as hard as he could before firing the hurl at his head, could easily have cost opponent sight in an eye, how would he describe the behaviour?"
Three red card offences….yep I fully agree and I knew he was sent off before I seen after that he threw the hurl but going to town on a teenager on a forum/social media isn't acceptable.
We've all done things in the heat of the moment and out of frustration. Let the GAA deal with the incident.

You could hardly say he flaked as hard as he could and that he was in danger of losing his eye sight though. It's not the first time a player has hit a lad like that or threw a hurl.

Good tho to see that someone here actually knows the rules before criticising the referee for interpreting the rules properly in those instances! It's a shame that there's no talk of the scores, skill level or ferocious defending in the game. There was so much great things that happened in that game

Off the top of my head while I'm eating my cornflakes Peter Casey on Sunday ,Cian Kenny on Saturday Patrick Horgan in Thurles, Aaron Fitzgerald against Limerick, Padraig Mannion often, Paul Conroy in the football game last week. Pundits call it winning a free but its common enough

Trip followed by a push in the back with the hurl holding hand to make sure he went down.
