Did you watch the game? The referee's decisions in closing stages completely decided the outcome. Nothing else. To say Offaly had the game won in their heads is nonsense. The far better team lost and it's simply not acceptable that blatantly wrong decisions were responsible. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2152 - 03/07/2022 17:49:28 2429463 Link 1 |

Thought it should have been a free out for Offaly, but over 60 ins these decisions even out. Easy to the blame the ref, when Offaly had an extra man and a substantial lead. befair (Down) - Posts: 238 - 03/07/2022 18:23:28 2429474 Link 0 |
Highly enjoyable game. Congrats to Tipp, Offaly very unlucky not to hang on. A win would have done more for Offaly hurling than Tipperary. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 2320 - 03/07/2022 18:23:59 2429475 Link 0 |
Really enjoyable game of hurling. Offaly were excellent and I cant imagine what its like being a person closely involved with the team right now. They showed so much heart. Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1468 - 03/07/2022 18:24:30 2429476 Link 0 |

Would having it Croke park have taken away from the atmosphere? It looked like an unreal crowd and noise. MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1000 - 03/07/2022 21:52:30 2429528 Link 0 |
You got it right. Offaly lost because they didn't hurl a ball in the last 10 minutes. Once Tipp got within a goal, I knew they were going to win it. The free at the end wasn't as "blatant" as made out to be. The player went down looking for it and there's no shortage of theatrics by all teams now and players looking for frees. Admittedly, I thought they should have had a penalty for the hurl throwing incident (which should be a red card all day long as it is as dangerous as striking with the hurl). An unbeleivable and enthralling hurling match. Some of the scores and accuracy from distance werent seen in the senior games at the weekend. I completely disagree that this game showed that it should go back to U18 - what game were you looking at?! This has been an unbelievable Minor championship....far more enjoyable than the senior....and not because Tipp won it. I think anyone who seen the majority of games would agree. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 04/07/2022 09:17:35 2429555 Link 0 |
Look at it again .The Tipperary player came across him and he tripped over his outstretched leg. It was a free out all day long

Admittedly I am not a good person to talk about hurling but the young Tipp lad throwing his hurl at another player is disgraceful and should be punished as much as the eye gouge by the Armagh player in the All Ireland Football semi final. naomh_conaill_4 (Donegal) - Posts: 502 - 04/07/2022 10:49:35 2429578 Link 1 |
Absolutely agree. Wonderful game two great teams.Brilliant display by Offaly until the last ten minutes.Tipp were never say die and just would not lie down. I thought ref did ok big call at the end but thats sport.Loads of positives for Offaly and the likes of ourselves have to up our game big time to keep up.

Yes but the referee didn't have the benefit of a replay like you did and made the best decision he could based on what he saw real time. It is getting increasingly difficult for referees as diving is now widespread in both hurling and football. If a player goes down theatrically, then you are running the risk. Go and win the ball instead of falling looking for a free I always tell our young lads.

I think that is the point. Not qualified to comment on if an error was made but if it was hurling is the loser. The sport can do with the Offaly, Westmeath and yes I have seen first hand how Kildare can play the game also. So it is important when success is justified that is fortunate enough to happen.

The only mitigating factor is his age where we're genuinely talking about a child, so on that front I'm very slow to have a serious go at the lad. At this age he needs training and a good talking to so he understands that but for the grace of God that flying hurl didn't connect with the Offaly boy's ear or throat.

Hasn't been an injustice like the one in yesterday's minor game, since MS denied Louth a Leinster title in 2010. Offaly were robbed, last incident was a clear free out & there were two other very contentious frees in the last 10 minutes. The thrown hurl incident should have been a penalty as well as it clearly struck & put off the Offaly player & denied him a goal scoring chance. Awful to see young lads robbed by officiating like that, best team on the day done out of an All Ireland title. Offaly going the right direction putting skill ahead of size, in other counties Screeny would be dropped for being too light. Credit the coaches & coaching Development in Offaly for putting skill first, shame it wasn't rewarded. moc.dna (Galway) - Posts: 1212 - 04/07/2022 15:46:48 2429684 Link 1 |
List some examples of diving in recent hurling matches if they're that prevalent? Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2152 - 04/07/2022 15:55:47 2429686 Link 0 |
Hurl throwing incident was outside large square so couldn't be penalty and the black card rule only exists at senior level so in fairness to ref he can't be criticised on that decision. Tipp poster not happy with my description of corner forward's behaviour, he committed three red card offences in one incident, flaked Offaly lad twice as hard as he could before firing the hurl at his head, could easily have cost opponent sight in an eye, how would he describe the behaviour?
