Replying To REDANDBLACK30:  "The Irish government should be planning now because if a vote was to pass how do they plan to deal with the security situation of angry loyalists causing trouble etc?? Unionists will not accept a democratic vote."
Éire Nua was a good plan. It would have given unionists a lot of local autonomy within a 32 county state. Which would have regional local governments with a lot more powers than county councils.

There seems to be no imaginative attempts to persuade them on that basis. Nor to promise that a 32 county Ireland be any more than an extension of the 26 counties which is rapidly losing its identity and sovereignty to EU and multi nationals.

Replying To tireoghainabu:  "If Germany with a population of over 80 million was successfully re-united, I don't think Ireland with a population of 7 million would be a major problem. I imagine Britain would consider paying the annual 14 million block grant in the short term, they would be only too glad to get rid of us. The EU would be the main contributor with the US also contributing with capital investments."
Sorry 14 billion not 14 million.

There has been a lot of talk about a "new Ireland" lately from the SDLP etc but almost all Unionists still support the Union and the 32 county Socialist Republic as advocated by People Before Profit is not popular with Unionists either.

Replying To REDANDBLACK30:  "I heard a figure that the £10 billlion it would cost to run the North would only be about 4% of Irish GDP so the fall in living standards would be very small?? The tax rises might be as little as 5%-10%?? How much of a tax rise would the population of the Republic deem worthwhile or acceptable??"
No rise would be acceptable. Our upper rate kicks in at the 40000 which is roughly the median wage so half of taxpayers are paying the higher rate which is not the case in the UK. That 4% figure has been plucked out of thin air. A 5% or 10% tax rise is not little for many families.

We can't deal with it. We are still reliant on the RAF to protect our own airspace because the government has underfunded defence for decades.

It is true that there is a lot of support for a United Ireland in the Republic 70-80% in most polls, but the polling shows many do not want to pay higher taxes for unification.

If CAB gets going on a lot of "business activities" in the 6 Cos the Public purse will soon swell.

That PBP notion is not popular in this part of Ireland. That party has about 2%/3% support. Their TD's were elected on a SF surplus at the last election.

In doing so you would be cutting off part of the ancient territory of Bréifne. to which you pay homage.

The same up here, very few take them seriously. I don't think Sinn Fein would want to depend on PBP to form a government as their demands would be far too radical.

Were the DHL team a professional rugby team, or DHL employees? Based on some of their backs, their backplay, and their defence of high kicks in the first half, it was hard to know. All Munster had to do in the first half was kick the ball up in the air, and they seemed to be guaranteed that carnage would ensue under it. I think Marcus Horan called it 'creativity' at one point.

Great credit to Munster, done it the hard way. Hodnet, Klyne and one or two more may have forced their way into extended Irish squad.

Is that the rugby equivalent of the Tailteann cup?

I don't think so. I heard Donal Lenihan calling it the greatest club game ever played on the 9oc news. Fellas need 'catch themselves on' as they say down in Munster.
