Replying To Viking66:  "There's a good few young fellas around here from European, Asian and African backgrounds playing. But I agree most are more likely to play soccer at the minute as their parents, if they are immigrants, are far more likely to have played soccer in Nigeria, Ukraine, or China than they are to have played hurling or Football when they were young lads themselves. As regards participation there are a lot of immigrants playing soccer here, and being "socially productive" that way. I know of a good few Irish families around here who would be soccer families also, and dont play GAA at all. Im sure up your way you know numerous Dublin born and bred people who would be the same, and theres numerous more Irish born and bred people up your way who dont play any sport, and view a hurl purely as a weapon to use in a robbery or revenge attack. Maybe for a bit of debt collecting also.
And most of the cricket clubs in Ireland have a good few lads from the Indian subcontinent playing for them.
Unfortunately people with your attitude aren't going to encourage any of the above categories of people to take up any GAA sports."
Lee Chin has spoken about the abuse he has received over the years and not too long ago a very public incident in Tip. Not saying that the same abuse doesn't happen in other sports but its not a good look to any minorities who would look at getting involved.

No sign of Barney. His usual thing of leaving a thread for a day or two until he can post again.

Who would have thought that forcing out a successful manager would backfire so badly.

Player power rarely brings anything good.

With the budget constraints the FAI have, I don't think there were too many candidates with her experience available. It looks a poor decision for sure to have pushed her out after getting us to a World Cup, which is more difficult to achieve than qualifying for the Euros.
She is the only manager who has qualified our ladies senior team for a major tournament.

Is Connacht Rugby a rival to Galway hurling? How many of the Connacht Squad were Galway intercounty hurling standard before they signed for Connacht?"
It is a rival to Galway and Mayo Football.

It isn't.

What has that got to do with your scéal about Galway hurling grounds in Ballinasloe and Connacht Rugby?

With the big push by the FAI on LOI, and the new structures being introduced today, will it have a negative affect on young people taking up or playing GAA.?

So much positivity around LOI at the moment with how it is being advertised, marketing of the game, the Summer/Autumn calendar of games, plans for stadia development, tv coverage, massive increase in attendances in comparison to previous, and general appeal of LOI clubs and games at this present time.

Then we have the GAA taking away free tickets to children for league games. Bad timing or what.???

IMO the GAA need to be careful or youth participation might start to fall.

'Positivity around LOI'? I must have missed that. I don't see the point of being positive about LOI, when it isn't producing any quality players for the senior international soccer side, or the English Premiership, with any sort of regularity. When the LOI starts producing quality players of senior international calibre, I'll be going along to take a look myself.

I know it's lost on many in Ireland but there's a whole world of soccer outside the Premier league and even England.

You dont feel more positive about the LOI now compared to say the past decade.??
I disagree tbh.
I think it is definitely on an upward curve.

The interest in LOI this year has risen quite a bit and will only increase.

Look at your own local club - making great strides and a lot more competitive.

I think the marketing of LOI has improved substantially also.

It is a sad state of affairs when, as you say:
When the LOI starts producing quality players of senior international calibre, I'll be going along to take a look myself.

Go along to your local club next season and see the improvements for yourself...
Not at International or English Premiership level, but still worth going and supporting your local club, I would have thought.

But each to their own I guess.

Anyway, to say again, yes, there is positivity around LOI at the moment, and long may it continue.
And hopefully one day the players will reach your desired level of requirement... ;o)

Replying To TheFlaker:  "Now Barney I realise I am probably wasting my time here debating with someone who has no clue what they are talking about but here i will try again. I have posted previously about my work and how I am involved with multiple schools but you probably didn't read it or you chose to ignore it. You still rely on information from a teacher friend who apparently does exist.

The 2024 data we have shows a rise in the number of second-level students being granted Irish exemptions; up 33% at Junior Cycle and 22% at Leaving Certificate. This will be higher next year. You seem to think there are a huge number of immigrants that skew these figures. That is not the case. If you actually knew anything about the data collection and worked on the ground you would see that.

Now I can't share all of the data from individual schools for obvious reasons but I will give you an idea of the overall picture. This is a breakdown from 3 different small secondary schools in 3 different counties . They are all 3rd year students. Most exemptions are granted after assessments during 1st year carrying through to second year that's why I based it on 3rd year students.

Donegal School:
Class 1- 23 students/ 7 exempt
Class 2- 22 students/ 6 exempt
Class 3- 23 students/ 11 exempt

There are 5 Ukranian students included in the above.

Sligo School:
Class 1- 21 students/ 6 exempt
Class 2- 25 students/ 8 exempt
Class 3- 21 students/ 7 exempt

There are 3 Ukranian students and 1 American included in the above

Galway School:
Class 1- 25 students/ 6 exempt
Class 2 - 23 students/ 7 exempt
Class 3- 23 students/ 8 exempt

There are 4 Ukranian and 1 British student included in the above.

Now Barney you can keep coming on here posting absolute drivel if you want. You can keep pretending you are an expert on topics you know nothing about if you want. And you can keep getting your information from AngryJimPartiot2024 on Facebook if you want. But I am here with facts and I work on the ground everyday and can see the actual issues. If every immigrant left here tomorrow the drop out rate for Irish would continue to rise year on year."
Your statistics are meaningless. You don't even say whether the non Irish students are among the exemptions.

Of just one group of 19 students on a Fingal school there are 8 exemptions. All of them Africans.

They might not be everyones cup of tea, but Shamrock Rovers are doing Ireland and LOI proud in Europe.
5 games unbeaten in a European Group Phase. In 6th place with 3 wins and 2 draws. 11 goals scored and 4 conceded.
It is some achievement.

Chelsea up next though.... ;o)
But even still, it is a remarkable run and nearly 6 mill in the bank as a result.

Great opportunity to make the last 16 now.

Not getting into this tit-4-tat, but GaelScoil have never been more popular in recent years, even to non-Irish families.

As for the Irish language, it should be protected and preserved at all costs imo.
We are losing enough of our identity these days sadly.

I always look at Wales, and how they are not only protecting but promoting their Welsh language.

Anyway, continue gents....
