Why wouldn't they? Real socialism is about equality of education and opportunity. No more or less than that. What people do with that opportunity is then up to themselves.

Well how do you know if your post is approved or not and you cant edit a post? Not my problem or fault. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3699 - 17/02/2024 17:39:19 2526515 Link 1 |
That, and a social floor below which nobody can ever fall.

I live in South Derry these days and would always wish them the best to be honest. Support like I do for my home county wouldnt be there but it all depends on the opposition. As an Antrim man I don't get many days in the capital hunting for tickets as I'm sure you figured. The season is usually over not long after it begins, then what do you do with yourself, turn your back or keep an interest, I choose the latter.

Have Dublin people more in common with Liverpool and Manchester than they have with Donegal if you are judging by the soccer teams they support.

Went to Cork City vs Kerry FC in the League of Ireland, first time I went to see them, I just don't understand why soccer atmosphere is so toxic, fans mouthing off players on the sideline for a throw in, fans chanting f**k the kingdom. Why are soccer fans different then GAA or even rugby? DuhallowRed (Cork) - Posts: 304 - 18/02/2024 14:29:24 2526647 Link 0 |
The problem is generalisations 'Everyone in Donegal' or 'Everyone in Dublin'. Soccer in Dublin is confined to specific areas and demographs, ditto with GAA and Rugby. Best behaved fans IMO are Rugby ones, worst are soccer and somewhere between are GAA ones.

Have you never heard GAA supporters abusing the referee, opposition team players or opposition supporters?

It's very rare to hear large groups of GAA supporters chanting abuse at opposition fans. I don't think I've heard it. It is commonplace in soccer and seems to be part of the matchday experience. There are rehearsed chants for it. Plenty abuse for the ref at GAA matches alright. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2224 - 18/02/2024 15:45:35 2526681 Link 1 |
I'm not denying it happens but it's such a common place on soccer

It's common in GAA too unfortunately, especially if some supporters are intoxicated. Do you go to as many soccer games as GAA games?

I don't think you know too much about socialism! Check out the history of the Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics for a start. Socialism means state ownership and the abolition of private property. Nothing else. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3294 - 19/02/2024 00:53:13 2526838 Link 0 |
Well ots clear you dont either if thats your only view of what socialism is

We've been over all this. What you've described is communism. Socialism has been described as the gateway to communism by paranoid conservatives referring to Marxists. I think what people are trying to say is people generally across the US and EU tend to favour socialist ideas such as free education, healthcare, welfare system etc. True free market capitalism couldn't have these things because economics is supposed to regulate itself in that school of thought, Laissez-faire approach. In reality the most successful Nations, in Europe particularly have adopted Keynesian approach which is intended to be the best of both. The UN are actually the ones attempting to abolish private ownership. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3272 - 19/02/2024 08:15:10 2526850 Link 1 |
Were they not socialist? How do you define it? What people claim to be socialism in the west - public medicine, education etc, were already in place before there was a socialist party in power anywhere in the world, Those things were achieved through democracy and the representation of working people. None of which existed in ANY socialist state, all of which abolished free elections, trade unions and freedom of expression. Even the "socialist" parties like SF no longer support socialism as state ownership. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3294 - 19/02/2024 08:44:52 2526854 Link 0 |
That's Communism Barney. I've an Honours degree in a Social Science and got distinctions in A and S level Economics at school. I know what Socialism is. And I'm not talking about media generalisations.
