Everyone gets hysterical these days over this kinda stuff. Read Nicky Rackards biography see how hurling was in the 40s and 50s. Or watch reeling in the years see how Meath played football more recently than that. Yes violence on or off the pitch isn't great but it's been happening since the GAA was founded. These are contact sports. If someone goes too far send them off to cool down. If they are consistent repeat offenders ban the ######s. When Trillick re-emerged on the scene a few years ago, they weren't afraid to play off-the-cuff football. But in the last 2 to 3 years, they have gone too cautious and try to make sure of every score. That'll get you past weaker teams, but you don't get loads of gilt-edged chances against the stronger teams. We rarely hear of this behaviour in rugby circles" If you rarely hear of it in rugby circles, you mustn't be listening too hard mate! Rugby at the moment is convulsed with the violence issue, and the concussion aspect of a game which has morphed for being a contact sport to being a collision sport. Some of even the permitted play in rugby would constitute a cardable offence in Gaelic, so the violence is baked in. I wouldn't let my kids near it. And I was reading an article in the Irish Times only today (18 Jan) by Gordon D'Arcy about the violence in both rugby and GAA. And both sports were way rougher in the 70s and 80s. Back then, certainly in Gaelic, if a man got hit, he'd stay on his feet to show it hadn't bothered him, even if he couldn't breathe. Nowadays though, like the Fossa lad, they're watching too much soccer and dropping like flies at the lightest contact. I remember a Tyrone county player a few years ago getting no end of abuse nationally for hitting the deck when he got a light tap on the head. He got some stick for that, and rightly so tbh. But Fossa won the game because they had a lad who did similar, essentially cheated to get a man sent off. Of course, he knew he was playing to a ref out to do a number on the Tyrone team. It's a very uphill task for even a county team, trying to minimise the damage from David Clifford even with a full defence, but a man down in defence v Clifford, the game was lost. Sure, have a go at the Tyrone guy for lashing out at the end, no excuses, but in the interests of fairness, a bit of condemnation for diving and playacting when non-Tyrone players do it would show a bit of balance. points50swiththeargyllsonthewrongfeet (Tyrone) - Posts: 267 - 18/01/2023 21:42:05 2453032 Link

I work down South a lot, and the company I worked in always had maps with the head of the island cut off. Couldn't agree more with you. As for Tyrone, they are our neighbours and, in my opinion, Donegal people have a much stronger affinity with them and our fellow Irish men and women in the north of Ireland than with any Wexford man or woman. I hope they do well at Senior level next year and for many years afterwards." I think 100% of the GAA teams in Ireland are a credit, a few bad tackles you can understand but not elbows and the like. A few years back Michael Murphy got straight red for ,and for me not a red, what the ref thought was kicking, it wasn't anyway near kicking, it was miss timed and he didn't follow through like a normal kick.
