Why Why Why, Derry seniors play in Croke Park Saturday 25th the same day as their Minors play Galway in ?????????, Derry supporters/parents of minors now cannot go to see seniors play !!!!!!!!!! why not play a treble header in Croke Park, minor Derry v Gal at 12.30, followed by Derry v Clare in senior followed by Galway v Armagh. This logic would allow Derry & Galway fans to support BOTH their teams Following day Sunday 26th another treble header, Minor Mayo v Kerry at 12.30, followed by Mayo v Kerry in senior followed by Dublin v Cork This logic would allow Mayo & Kerry supporters to support both their Minor and Senior teams on the one day in the one venue, instead of traveling to see their minors on Saturday and then off again to Croke Park to support their seniors on Sunday Who makes these decisions !!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, the GAA over the past several years has transitioned from a "patron" or "member" based model to that of a customer based model. Fans are commodities to be milked, and little more. He who pays the piper calls the tune. It is obvious that media corporations, private sponsors and corporate attendees (those paying for the expensive seats and boxes) have a lot more sway with the powers that be than ordinary members. The GAA should really drop the communitarian messaging in their marketing, because there are several recent incidences of them shelving home advantage/lower cost alternatives on the basis of "loadsamoney!" It's coming back to bite them now as people have obviously realised what's going on, as evidenced by recent low attendances at the Leinster SHC final and the football qualifier weekend. There clearly were issues to get around with U18 and U21 when doing leaving cert, in college and so on. But it worked, and was the base of underage for years and a route for young players to build through the grades and be fit to move towards senior. The current system shows it is hard for a 17yo to make it up to the U20 grade, and some are losing out on a year of playing. It was easier for an 18yo to do it in U21 level as they're a year stronger then. The move to U19 is just laughable for me. We need 2 grades (if not more actually, soccer has year grades for example) as how can any kid who turns 19 by the cut off at the start of the year be ready for senior football. What do they do for a few years until they can be ready? Some exceptional examples will always step up, but vast bulk of kids will fall behind here. They seem to be pushing for more Sigerson for some reason. It used to be a long weekend years ago, now they keep giving it more time. I think the pandemic got a lot of folks out of the habit of attending matches. The GAA should have been doing everything to get people back through the gates again. 60,000 tickets sold today for both sets of quarter finals. Not including season ticket holders which means Sunday week's matches already have 45,000 tickets sold. Dublin are more than happy to play Saturday evening in Croke Park but I'll bet there won't be a lot of red in the crowd for that game. Sunday games are generally better attended and Kerry V Mayo is a genuine big game - Croke Park is the right place for the big games. But lets not gloss over some of the crazier decisions made about venues this year. A continuation of this were the points made here about minor fixtures not being considered at all as curtain raisers. Not necessarily, fixing a double header involving Sunday weeks football teams for Croker, taking into account geography and estimated attendances,, is a totally different kettle of fish to sending last Saturdays counties to Croker. Honestly don't know about an objection and I agree not ideal for Derry fans. Has not being in the nature of our board from previous but then again only speculating. However technically speaking fans if they wish and their travel arrangements allow one could get to the Derry minor game @1pm in PP and then their senior game @3.45pm in CP. Unsure why they could not have put the minor match on @2pm on the Sat in CP or indeed @12pm on the Sunday to facilitate Galway fans who would like to see their minors and seniors on the one programme. Here in Galway, Kenny Park is in my opinion a far more enjoyable place to attend a game than its bigger more illustrious cousin in salthill.
