What are everyone's thoughts on the Galway Club Championship draw? BigBadBill27 (Galway) - Posts: 15 - 07/06/2022 08:16:14 2422819 Link 1 |
My predictions to qualify from each group for the Q-Final would be - Group 1: Corofin, Moycullen, Tuam Group 2: Mountbellew/Moylough, Annaghdown Group 3: Killanin, Claregalway, Caherlistrane BigBadBill27 (Galway) - Posts: 15 - 07/06/2022 09:57:51 2422853 Link 1 |
Group 1 3 good teams 3 poor teams so basically top 3 will target bottom 3 and bottom 3 will target each other. Corofin and moycullen to advance, lmore spiddal and oughterard to dog it out, spiddal and ought to be sucked into relegation Group 2 annaghdown to top it MM loads of suspensions but should have enough, carraroe barna and or james sucked into relegation, some good derbies on the cards Group 3 on paper the easier group, now or never for kilanin after last years no show, claregalway need to back up their population, micheals solid but haven't done much at this level ever. Monivea, caherlistrane and miltown for the dog fight For the drop carraroe spideal lmore monivea Corrofin for the cup Sportsfanatic90 (Westmeath) - Posts: 223 - 08/06/2022 18:19:55 2423448 Link 0 |
"Corofin for the cup"? Big improvements needed since their last championship outing against Mountbellew Moylough last year if their going to win it this year.. I can see Moycullen really challenging them this year along side Tuam Stars in the group stages. It has been a while since Corofin drew tough teams in the group stages so this year will be interesting. As regard relegation, its wide open! I can name 5/6 teams that could be in the mix for that. You'd have to fancy Claregalway to go far just because they have landed in a soft group and have all the underage talent coming through. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 790 - 09/06/2022 13:52:37 2423590 Link 0 |
Qualifiers Group 1: Corofin, Moycullen,Tuam Stars Group 2: Mountbellew/Moylough, Annaghdown, Barna Group 3: Miltown, Killanin Still between Corofin, Moycullen and M/M if im being realistic. I think Claregalway are still a fair bit off and yet to show any reason to think otherwise at senior level. ned_flanders (Galway) - Posts: 65 - 09/06/2022 20:20:17 2423697 Link 0 |
Claregalway have just never gotten of the mark considering all the talk about them, the size of their parish and the young talent coming through! But you are probably right, they should realistically see themselves through that group. I think Cooke is back for Moycullen so time will tell if they have what it takes to beat Corofin. Mountbellews only downfall is the lack of youth coming through, when you take the county lads out of their set up they really struggle as we have noticed from league results. Corofin really struggled to replace the likes of Fitzgearld, Sice and Farragher last season but I think Farragher and Sice will be back this season to carry the younger lads through. As for replacing Fitzgearld, I'm not sure will they see another full back like him in our time. BigBadBill27 (Galway) - Posts: 15 - 10/06/2022 08:20:30 2423706 Link 0 |
CG really struggling in the league. Lot of injuries and lads who have emigrated. Don't think Moycullen have it in them to win it again. Very few clubs can also manage the senior and intermediate juggling act. Since its nearly 6 months since proposed bans were seemingly to be issued to mountbellew players, we haven't heard a thing so i am assuming that whole thing was put to bed and on that basis i'd give a nod to them to win it but with Corofin to go quite close. Tuam have huffed and puffed the last few years but don't have the quality up top to make a big dent at this stage. BLT (Galway) - Posts: 53 - 10/06/2022 09:52:18 2423715 Link 0 |
Whats the format this year for relegation does anyone know? Heard its 3 down is that true? tribesman123 (Galway) - Posts: 37 - 10/06/2022 10:54:33 2423732 Link 0 |
Its good they have moved the start back to august to allow players some holiday time after the league. Starting the week before the races is crazy for clubs and families. County players need time off too before championship starts - they will have come off a very tough season and they need a break. Clubs also need some time to integrate them back in and prepare for championship Nogoal (Galway) - Posts: 62 - 10/06/2022 15:56:12 2423805 Link 0 |
It was in the Tuam herald the last day. Apparently 2 down, 1 up. Two worst 6th placed teams go into a relegation round robin, the other 6th place and the 3 5th placed teams play off against each other, with the two losers going into the relegation round robin. Then the two bottom placed in the round robin get relegated.

If thats the case it is not only overcomplicated but it is illogical too....if every game follows an exact formline then the 2 relegated teams will be the worst and the 3rd worst.

Not sure I understand your reasoning. Surely if results go as expected, the 4 teams in the relegation round robin will be the 3 6th placed teams and the worst 5th placed team, then the two worst in that round robin go down.

Their bans got reduced, they are all eligible to play come championship. I think your right, it will come down to M/M and Corofin again this year, Moycullen don't have the depth in the squad to win it again. Tuam will be there but also don't have the depth in their squad to win it either. BigBadBill27 (Galway) - Posts: 15 - 14/06/2022 12:16:20 2424922 Link 0 |
Big win for claregalway beating a fancied moycullen albeit missing their stars. Sportsfanatic90 (Westmeath) - Posts: 223 - 19/06/2022 16:15:05 2426108 Link 0 |
Corofin V Annaghdown league final! Corofin very strong again this year, A lot of young lads coming through and getting game time in the league. Annaghdown will no doubt put it up to them as Corofin are there for the taking in the league final but cant see past them in the championship. U are right. It was the way that it was explained that confused me. Still a bit cumbersome but at least it is fair.

Just to be clear about the suspensions . Some were reduced and some were completely overturned as players involved were mis-identified by the referee. In actuality most of the players originally suspended did not miss any game at all.

No problem, I agree it's convoluted, and I don't have the writing chops like the big dogs in the Tuam herald to describe it properly. It seems fair, teams have to lose probably 3 or 4 games to be relegated. Will be tough for some teams that are ending up in very strong groups (group 1), but there's plenty of opportunities to stay up. systematic (Galway) - Posts: 119 - 22/06/2022 09:17:32 2426750 Link 1 |
Rumour has it, M Daly & B Mchugh wont be featuring until the later stage of the championship this year for Mountbellew! The spine of the Mountbellew team in my opinion.. That could fine them not making it out of their group, as they always seem to struggle in the early stages of the championship..
