Pretty much curtains for any prospect of the hurlers going anywhere if this is for good. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 2584 - 01/06/2022 11:52:14 2421540 Link 0 |
That's a shame if true.. O Donnell is a superb hurler. A full back and would play on any team in the country.

Is that definite? Terrible news for hurling in general if it is.

Hopefully it is not a permanent switch. It would be a huge blow for the hurlers. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4624 - 01/06/2022 12:24:17 2421550 Link 0 |
Comments here are a bit dramatic. He joined in after the hurlers were knocked out which to me suggests its hurling first for him - remains to be seen but its hardly him jumping off the hurling panel mid season as the hurlers are gone tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 01/06/2022 13:00:44 2421554 Link 3 |
The big question there is whether is whether it's permanent. If it's just for this year, with the hurlers already out, I don't see any issue from a hurling supporter's point of view. Of course, if it's a permanent switch it's a huge blow to the hurlers WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2046 - 01/06/2022 13:35:37 2421568 Link 0 |
Good news for the footballers if true, he's a very good stylish footballer in a line we could do with, plays half forward for WHCC, even though he's a defender in hurling. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 01/06/2022 13:35:41 2421570 Link 1 |
I did say "if it's for good." Might not be, but it tends to be. Not sure where he might fit in with footballers, but if he establishes a place and they at least make the semi finals, I would be surprised if he returns. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 2584 - 01/06/2022 14:07:27 2421580 Link 0 |
I havent seen him play football but I'd the odds of him being seen this year in a cship match is low.

Don't know the chaps mind but imo he's a hurler first jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 01/06/2022 15:05:56 2421596 Link 1 |
Marking Conor Whelan for a match would do this to a lad. Some have even looked up opportunities abroad after such afternoons. Few months with the footballers watching his opponents run in circles doing sweet **** all and his love for the small ball will soon return. Early days to say it's a permanent move, the hurlers are gone from their championship so there is logic in him moving across. However in doing so he'll likely be part of a set up that gets through to the All Ireland semi, final or might even win the All Ireland, he might want to get used to that level of competition/success. For all the resources put into Dublin hurling, significantly more than most counties at the same level 20 years ago Dublin hurling just hasn't got up to the standard I'm sure many hoped it would. There is no doubt it has improved but if players are good at both football and hurling you'd expect Dublin players to choose football if they want to play in the big games, in the same way you'd expect Tipperary players to choose hurling. It's difficult to be a dual county and genuinely compete. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 01/06/2022 15:41:14 2421611 Link 0 |
Interesting move by Dessie bringing him in at this stage of the year but I know among some football circles he was definitely seen as one that got away when he chose hurling a good number of years ago. He is a physical specimen and a natural leader so he won't be one bit intimidated stepping into the football set up which obviously has massive characters with plenty of All Irelands. To be fair to him, he had a good handle on Whelan for half that game at least and to the best of my memory its the only 30 mins of hurling where hes been got the better of for years.

I'd agree. I thought he did well for spells in the game. He won a number of the balls played in early on. Whelan did get on top in the 2nd half especially and racked up a good score in the end. It was a great tussle to watch in what was otherwise a very stop-start game. Two of the best in the game going at it 1-on-1. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2046 - 01/06/2022 17:00:51 2421640 Link 2 |
Hopefully its not a permanent switch he'd be a big loss to Hurling. But you couldn't blame the guy if it is. At least now he has a realistic chance of winning something. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1913 - 01/06/2022 17:58:20 2421669 Link 0 |
I dont know where to start .The post was short but more or less everything you put it in it makes me embarassed that you are from Galway. Apologies on behalf of my countyman.

Of course. It's no slight on the man himself, and of course we have no idea whether this will be a definite departure from the hurling set up. I wouldn't have imagined that he was ever on the radar for the senior footballers, but probably would have said the same about his club man Lee Gannon who was on the under 20 hurling team two years ago. Whitehall were well beaten in all their group games last year, Now he has clearly improved after a shaky start and seems to have pinned down a starting spot in the backs with an attacking dimension. They only have to look at Costello to see where one path or the other might take them. Sad but true. Anyway, good luck to Eoghan. Ah yes seems he's a good lad. Good luck to him. But hurling needs a competitive Dublin and he makes such a difference to your team. So if he does stick with football it won't be just Dublins loss.

Top fellah is Eoghan. I have watched him develop into the finest full back in the country. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1138 - 03/06/2022 10:06:16 2421907 Link 0 |
