Mullet An Óige Agus Tiocfaidh Siad

(Oldest Posts First)

Anybody else really enjoying this mullet craze that has livened up the underage championships for the past 18 months? Offaly, Cork, Kildare and Down with superb examples at minor and U20 level. its great to see.

I would have a concern that not many mullets are making it through the grade to senior level. The only real exception being Gary Mohan. I was particularly disappointed to see Shea Ryan's mullet didn't get a second season for Kildare. It was the highlight of an otherwise drab Leinster Final in '21.

I watched Galway v. Mayo in the minors a few weeks ago and it was truly mullet madness ;) It just goes to show that if you live long enough, most of the fashion and personal grooming trends come around again. Although rather that than the triangle, in fairness.

Senior team charters probably have a 6cm hair length limit.

Seán Fitzgerald from our senior panel has a great version too. Injury has limited the mullet's opportunities in this year's championship, but it might make an appearance yet.

It's sad how once something becomes fashionable, many more will mindlessly ape it,,, but enough about the blanket defence......

Lockjaw thought some of haircuts this year looked as if the bowl was used..what is the story with fellas getting cuts nearly every week, surely it needs time to grow..ah well each to their own..it's very funny the way fashion is coming back..

Do yez remember the buzz cut style from years ago, but the fringe was left long? Might go for one of those next.

What was that tall lad from Mayo in the 80s/90s with the mullet? Before my time but always gives me a laugh.

You need special permission from the 'head coach' to go and get a haircut in an evening, unless it is an approved type style which doesn't affect the rest of the team

Willie Joe wasn't tall, about 5 feet 9, but had a hell of a leap.

When and why did Mullets haircurs with young fellas come into fashion, are they following some celebrity?

Liam McHale had a mullet of sorts, but more in the Aonghus McAnally way. There was a Finnerty lad with a permed mullet. That's next level.

LOL indeed he was, "the bullet from Belmullet". WJ's son Billie Joe also played for Mayo in the 2000s.

Willie Joe's was in the same mould as Plunkett Donaghy's from Tyrone, not really true mullets.
That accolade went to Gerry Mc Inerney who had a true mullet.
New style is the mullet & it permed, the high fade & the V are still top dog. The mullet & white boots are a brave statement by any player, the one man who could carry it off was Gerry Mc Inerney, great player.
