Back Pass To Keeper

(Oldest Posts First)

A technical issue here, if a goalkeeper receives an illegal back pass from a defender (that is, he kicks the kickout to the defender, who passes straight back to him) while he is standing in the small rectangle is that still a 13M free, or is it a penalty as it is a technical foul in the small rectangle?

Penalty I'd imagine. Any foul inside the small square is a penalty in football.

All fouls inside small rectangle are penalties, however this is a contradiction to rule and a 13m free from centre of goals is awarded

Kick outs are taken on the 21 meter line.. hard to imagine a scenario where a keeper would be in receipt of the first ball after the kick out while in that square. But yes, a technical foul in the small rectangle is a penalty.

It's actually a free from centre of goals,
Also another technicality which is possible is if another person takes the kickouts, the goalkeeper must be inside small square and still can't receive first pass but player taking kick can.

Interesting! I'd have got that one wrong in a quiz for sure! Still can't see it happening in a real game situation to be honest, unless as you say an outfielder takes the kick. Good rule to know in that case!

Would both games be better without a back pass? It'd definitely lead to more attacking hurling if the corner back hadn't the option to go back to the keeper.

Its a funny one.

By allowing the short puck out and return pass to the keeper the opposition have to push up to stop it happening, this then encourages more attacking.

Some teams on the other hand let the short puck out happen and just pack the defense and take their chances.

With so many long range points these days i'd say teams will start pushing up more. this will then encourage more attacking
