Replying To Green_Gold:  "You make a great point here, soccer goes through long periods of the game with absolutely nothing happening. The problem arises when teams like Donegal move the ball from defence to the attacking zone at a slow pace, this allows the opposition to set up their defensive wall. The Ulster final was a great example, Donegal took short kickouts and their build up play was at a snails pace, this allowed Derry to get all their players back, its then impossible for an attacker to get into a good shooting position.

I thought Tyrone last year showed the way forward with lots more kick passing and moving the ball at pace. Donegal just run and run, then run some more."
Soccer and gaelic are completely different sports though so I don't think it's a valid comparison. A single score in a soccer match is enough to win a game. So technically inferior teams can sometimes upset favourites by being well drilled and nicking something from a rare counter attack or set piece.

I do agree with your other point. The ball will travel faster than any man. Early and accurate kick passing should be adopted more.

Replying To essmac:  "Lot of hysteria about defensive football. Lots of other team sports do that all the time. Just watch the recent European soccer final. Very defensive. But you don't hear a big uproar among soccer pundits calling for rule changes to address the "problem". Good defending in any team sport is an art, and the answer is that attackers must get faster and better.

Too many GAA teams, faced with a well-organised defence, are too ponderous and cautious - scores come from work rate, speed, massed attacks, and half chances. Too many teams looking for perfect opportunities which don't exist. Too many olé ole GAA fans would prefer a game littered with defensive errors, so long as they can let out a big roar every time there's another score.

The real problem with defensive football is not the defensive football, but the poor attackers."
Interesting post. The game has changed all right for better or worse. For me it's speed of transition from defense to attack that's crucial. Players are athletes first, footballers second.
Do you think Peter canavan or Martin mc hugh would be able to score as much in today's game?.
They would probably be a little light and be playing in the half back line.

More importantly in club footballs they are PEOPLE first.

I think this is what a lot of egotistical coaches are forgetting and only seem to be concerned with themselves. I have noticed in the county since the county leagues started this year a raft of reserve games being called off. Will be interesting to see the total figures from the CB at year end. Players are just fed up with it and pulling the plug. We are hemorrhaging club players in this county as the enjoyment has been sucked out of playing.

It's more of a chore than a hobby to players these days.

The big problem with defensive football is that it is much easier to coach and even your very average athletic super fit player with very little football skills can easily master it and if he buys in and is aware how the stats work can stay on a county panel for years.
It is much more difficult to coach and develop skillfull attack minded players which is what we all want to see and what is happening at the moment is that the skill and football is being coached out of such players so that stats loss of possession not attempting a score unless there is a 90% chance of success is all that coaches are worried about. This is why super forwards like the gooch will soon be a thing of the past.

I would agree with this and if there was a way to get your manager out and about the country coaching teams I think the game would be in a healthy state. Great mix of brilliant defending and great attacking football in my opinion. There's no doubt in my mind that Mickey Graham is the best manager out there at the moment.

This defensive football is killing the game, and people wonder why less people want to pay in to see it, or even play it anymore.
People want to see an entertaining game, not fellas hand passing the ball to each other endlessly trying to 'work an opening' and retain possession, it's getting as boring as soccer.
The whole way the GAA is being run now is doing a lot of harm too, the are ramming this years intercounty Championship through as quick as they can, the disregard for fans in the way they are not having minor and senior matches for counties played at the same venue on the same day smacks of an organisation that just doesn't give a damn.
As long as they have Croke Park free for Garth Brooks concerts and the like seems more important to them. I'd say the ne Casement Park will be no different, a cash cow for the suits.

St. Eunans 1-01
Kilcar 1-04

It was 1-00 to 0-01 at HT!

On a perfect day for football between the current county champions and 3rd best team in the county and this was the end result?

We need to have a serious look at ourselves from a coaching perspective in this county."
Was that a league match?

In all fairness, if two of the best clubs in the county (who won't get relegated) can't go out in a league match and play some FOOTball then things will only get worse

The day of the no score draw on the cards up there

Find it humerous that Rory Kavanagh was on the Paddy Mc Gill show talking about that Donegal needed to do to break down Derry, yet his Eunans side score one point from play a day or two later. Not taking away from his championship win last year, just highlighting maybe the senior County game isn't as easy as people think.

And the Eunans chairman also likes to educate us a lot.

Any word when the championship draws are being conducted?

Less than 8 weeks out now and not a word about it?

Gweedore and Ballyshannon putting up a decent scores in the league so I don't think every club is sticking to defensive football.

So now that county football is over for us for 2022 we can all concentrate on the club scene. I assume the championship draws will be made soon? A good few weeks away yet before it all begins.

In the senior it's hard to look beyond the big 4. Eunans and Glenties look to be particularly strong but Kilcar & Gaoth Dobhair would be quietly confident that they could upset either on a good day. Of the chasing pack it's hard to make a compelling case for anyone. It would be great to see the likes of St Michaels, Glenswilly and maybe even Aodh Ruadh mount a charge. Aodh Ruadh have been chalking up decent results in the league but as we all know Championship will be another step up. They certainly seem to be moving in the right direction though.

The intermediate should be very competitive. Dungloe will be highly motivated to clear the final hurdle this year but the likes of Naomh Columba, Buncrana and Malin will be confident too. I think Fanad Gaels might be a dark horse. They're tipping away nicely and their recent Gaeltacht success will have galvanised them.

In the junior I think Downings will be hard to beat although Letterkenny Gaels, Carndonagh and Na Rossa will have something to say too.

My big (maybe wishful thinking) hope is that we see some open expansive football that allows our best players in the county to flourish. I think the day of the crowded defences, retaining possession at all costs days are numbered. Teams like Armagh and Galway are showing the way. I know Derry won an Ulster playing defensively but that was a means to an end. Now that they have that monkey off their back I think they'll need more tactical tricks than that if they want to be successful down in Croke Park. Shaded of the Donegal 2011 about them.

Downings won the junior last year Lockjaw and went all the way to the Ulster Final. Given their potent forward line they could be do some damage in intermediate this year. They have already beaten the likes of Dungloe, Milford, Four Masters and St. Nauls. I would give the nod to Naomh Columba for this one.

Agree with you on the senior predictions as it's all very predictable. Aodh Ruadh the only ones who might cause a shock.

Carndonagh are the team to beat in Junior if O'Donnell doesn't go Stateside.

Apologies you're right of course. I got my years mixed up. It happens me quite often, I sometimes can't differentiate the two Covid years! Either that or I'm just getting old!

It would be nice to see a bolter really shake up the senior Championship. What way is the draw being done this year?

Happens to the best of us!

I would hope that they might at least consider seeding the groups, at least that way you're nearly hopeful that QFs will be somewhat competitive.

It's st eunans to lose. Best squad of players in Donegal. With Shane o donnell a year older and a few new lads coming in, can't see them not winning it. Kilcar too dependant on there big players not being injured. Don't know about gweedore there dangerous on there day. N Conal can't see them winning it Leo , wade, and Anthony have a lot of miles on the clock. Glenswily will be competitive a lot of good young lads coming thru. As for the rest aodh ruadh probably the best but they have no county men so there league position is misleading.

Is it not a league of 16 again? All play 4 rounds and top 8 through to QFs.

Yeah I think Eunans will be hard to beat. They won it with a young team last year and they're only going to get better as they get more physically stronger and streetwise. Shane O'Donnell has been excellent and I get the feeling his brother Niall will want to prove a wee bit of a point. He didn't see much county action this year for one reason and another. But there's no doubting his ability. I wonder is Conor Morrison anywhere near a return to action? It would be fantastic to see him back. A superb defender with a great attitude.
