7 And Counting

(Oldest Posts First)

7 squad players have left a winning team within 6 months of winning - I wonder is that a record?

Tyrone fans will console themselves that most of them weren't nailed-on starters. But that overlooks the fact that any of them could have played a specific role in a half, depending on pitch and nature of opposition. T McCann and Donaghy are great for making havoc-inducing runs at the heart of an opposition defence. Bradley and Brennan are very tricky customers on a big dry pitch.

Good subs are vital. I've never seen a walk-out like this, not even during the many years when Tyrone won nothing.

I appreciate it's hard to keep a bench, but we seem to be worse at this than other counties.

It's an awful lot to lose in such a short time. Apart from what they might have done off the bench, I think the biggest loss will be to the training and how this benefited the team as a whole.
Having quality panelists means competition is much greater. It keeps the starters on their toes and having to continue working very hard. It also drives better quality training sessions.
It is a tough one for management to keep everyone on the panel committed.
One thing that's essential is that lads who are performing in training need to see this being rewarded. If every player believes he has a chance to break into the 1st team by putting in the work and performing, it helps greatly.
I've heard that Jim Gavin generally took this approach. Players who weren't playing but were doing very well in training, worked their way up the panel.

Might be that there are lads coming up and some of the lads who have left were going down the pecking order?

That could certainly be the case for some of them. They'll all have their own reasons. Panels are very big now, so it is a real balancing act trying to keep people committed and motivated.

Yes I'd agree - that's key to it - Gavin was ruthless in that regard, and so everybody felt they had a chance. Whereas too often you'll see an "established" player having a stinker of a game, but everyone has an off-day, and you know he'll be back on in the next game. And that's fair enough. But for some of our subs, in my view they never got that bit of slack - too often, it seemed to be "if you're not instantly brilliant for the 20 minutes we throw you on, you mightn't get another game for 6 months". So you could be flying in training, but it wouldn't matter.
