Why do you think you'll be playing someone from our group for definite in the prelim? Galway came second in group 1 last year and ended up playing Monaghan from group 4.

I meant the value of them. There's barely any reward for the winner.

Cavan were pushing for promotion from Division 2 and have serious aspirations of getting out of our group. Definitely not a team to be taken lightly. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7959 - 06/05/2025 10:22:54 2607020 Link 0 |
"rotate squad for the next two". Are you suggesting that we shouldn't even try to beat Tyrone or Donegal? IMO making a preliminary QF, a QF or even a SF by playing bad teams along the way won't do anything for this team. The only chance of salvaging something from this season is by going out there and beating quality teams such as Tyrone and/or Donegal which unfortunately, given Sundays result I don't see happening but they have to put best foot forward. Is it 6 Years now Rochford has been involved with Mayo as manager or selector and they have not won a Connacht title? sourmilk93 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1206 - 06/05/2025 10:46:15 2607029 Link 0 |
Correct. What that story doesn't tell is just how well Mayo performed in the AI finals in 16 & 17. Of all the AI final appearances that Mayo have had since 89, those 2 years were probably the best they performed. And I think that probably brought some good will in Mayo. But yes, unfortunately for Roch - 6 years involved and no Connacht title. Cbar (Mayo) - Posts: 351 - 06/05/2025 11:25:07 2607044 Link 0 |
Fair point. This is year 6. Hard to know who is running the show this year. Yer players know Davy Burke is the boss. Galway players know it's Padraig Joyce. McStay talks to the media but who's the man that the players look to as the boss?

Provincial title and bragging rights. Should be taken out All Ireland no route to All Ireland, no seedings. Play a few league rounds, start the provincials. Finish up last three or 4 rounds of the league close to championship with seeding for previous Tailtean winners and top 15. Could make the league more competitive up until last round. Then All Ireland is knockout football. None of this staggered breaks for teams before All Ireland dependant on the length of their provincial competition.

I am more than suggesting - its the own sensible coarse of action if Mayo are to get past an All ireland q final. In 2023, Mayo played well in a league final and then flopped against Roscommon the following week They then beat Kerry with a big performance, were poor against Louth and then flopped v Cork They then played well in the prelim qfinal before flopping again v Dublin in the q finals. In 2024, Mayo beat Roscommon handy before throwing away the Connacht championship They then cruised past Cavan and Roscommon before throwing away another big match v Dublin Then then flopped in the prelim q final. The reality of this team is they are not able to string back to back wins against top level teams. The Ulster finalists and Tyrone are in that top level bracket. If we go all out to win the group matches, we will still only win 2 at best having played all our core players in every match. Then we will have to play them in the prelim q final and q final (3 games in 3 weeks). We just dont have a squad good enough to keep a high level up for that level of opposition (Tyrone, Armagh/Donegal, Ross/Cork/Dublin, Kerry/Armagh/Donegal/Monaghan) for 4 weeks out of 5. Its alright sticking the chest out and saying we need to beat all comers in every match - no you don't - you need to put yourself in the the best position to win an All Ireland q final. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1375 - 06/05/2025 12:34:50 2607066 Link 0 |
I will when you can name 15 Cavan players without Google. Does the name cavan.galway mean your a Galway man who wont buy a pint? tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1375 - 06/05/2025 12:36:31 2607068 Link 2 |

I can name them all tirawleybaron. So are we getting another breakdown or not? That said, it will be hard to top the masterpiece you've already produced. cavan.galway (Galway) - Posts: 241 - 06/05/2025 13:01:31 2607082 Link 1 |

Didnt see your list of names there. Are you a cavan man or Galway man - or just a "whoever is playing Mayo" man. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1375 - 06/05/2025 14:52:10 2607123 Link 1 |

You left out momentum which is huge for team support. And from it Galway will have a big support in Pearse Stadium for the upcoming Dublin game. Then a more winnable game against out of sorts Derry than playing Tyrone in Omagh. Connacht losing it's connection to the All-Ireland series will basically make it become a preseason competition whereby the days if 27k turning up for a final will be over, Managers will use those matches to run their panels than field their strongest available 15s Yes the scheduling needs to be adjusted but tight now the GAA has a happy medium with the opportunity to win two championship trophies that every team takes serious and wants to win. It only malfunctions when dealing with a Cavan man who wishes he was a Galway man
