Geoblocked Matches In The North

(Oldest Posts First)

The Dublin v Armagh match was geoblocked in the North last week. It was available on RTE Player in the North. Does anyone know the reason for this?? It is the first GAA match I remember being blocked on RTE. Will Kerry v Dublin be available this week??

For years Irish rugby matches were blocked on RTE in the North but have recently became available. Champions League matches were blocked for many years and they have recently been made available as have Republic of Ireland matches that also used to be blocked. Is it RTE or Sky/ BT Sport/ British broadcasters who makes the decisions to block or allow matches to be shown?? Randomly the only other program that seems to be blocked for some reason is Home and Away. Don't watch that show and have no clue why that is??

I've always thought it was among the best reasons to vote for a United Ireland (of the hundreds) for many Northern Nationalists as it always seems to annoy many people on twitter.

I think it's the broadcaster RedandBlack. I can't log on to the BBC I Player, it'll ask for address in UK. Not sure how anyone outside the North can watch Down v Galway without a VPN. But Channel 4's All 4 app streams great. Could be a rights restriction thing, which I don't fully understand but think the broadcaster can only broadcast within a certain region. I know Talksport broadcast some live games and others are blocked due to rights restrictions.

And on that theme - why is the BBC coverage of the Football League only available online? Why don't they show it on BBC 2 Northern Ireland for example?

Yeah you are absolutely right. All matches should be available to everyone across the island. Surely something the GAA should address going forward??

Yes you are spot on. Down v Galway is supposed to be on BBC iplayer but I could only find it on BBC Sport NI website. I used to go to lots of Down matches before Covid but as I am nervous about catching the virus with my asthma I have to watch on tv now.

When the Kerry v Tyrone All Ireland semi final went to extra time last year part of the extra time was not shown in the North as the next programme due to be on after the match if it had finished after 70 minutes was Home and Away which is automatically blocked.

Kerry v Dublin is available to watch this week and is not blocked so it must have been an error last week.

The Kilkenny v Antrim match was the only top tier game not shown last night by RTE. It's getting absolutely ridiculous now. One Ulster side playing Div 1 hurling and RTE can't be bothered giving them any recognition??

It was ridiculous. But to be fair, this was all on Sky. They were the ones who geoblocked the game, not RTE. It was available on Virgin and BT platforms, just not Sky. And it's not the first time they have done this too (I live in the North too) and I've lost count of the amount of times I get a blank screen from there. luckily I'm near enough the border to use my aerial to watch, but that's really not the point. They really need to sort this out. I'd get it if it was Premier League football with huge amount paid for rights, but GAA needs to work with the broadcasters to make sure broadcasts are not blocked for a lot of people North of the border, that there are allowances in those agreements.
