Overrated by WHO? He's just starting out. Just got to Galway. Nobody (including Henry I'd say) even knows what the Galway team will look like. When St Thomas's are finished in the Club Championship then he will have a few more pieces to work with but even then there's no telling who makes the team and who doesn't.

Ah its silly to judge Henry Shefflin yet. He needs 2 seasons at least. He deserves that. I think he will give Galway confidence and maybe make them a 70 min team . He's got alot of work to do because Galway are not an easy team to manage. They are so individualistic and they lack onfield leadership. That's fixable. However I feel it will be a shock to him to see highly talented guys not really ready to 'kill their Granny ' to win. The Johnny Giles quote. Don't know how you change that mindset. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 20/01/2022 19:59:22 2395805 Link 1 |
You could be right, basically as a club manager he has a similiar history to Shane O Neill. He won't be affected the same way Shane was with no games to try out new players so that should help him. What he needs is time, support and patience from Galway hurling, but will ge get it?

By all accounts, he's injured and so was never going to be in Tipp's plans for the league. Not sure what the truth is though. Tipp won't win an All Ireland without him - if they have any chance. It would be a shame if he ended his career like that but not entirely surprised either. I'm sure more will come out in the coming weeks. Bubbles on form can rack up 6-7 points in a game - even in games he's not really in so to speak. Can't afford to let a lad like that go easily.

I'm surprised to that 2 or 3 of the older boys are still hanging on..ye had 2 great under 20/21 teams but not many were given a chance to nail down a starting spot..they were getting a few minutes here and there.jake Morris is really only fella who has been involved consistently, maybe the new manager will finally let some of these fellas have extended game time.. He was a bit of a passenger on that Kilkenny team. Just took the frees and was at end of a few handy goals.

From what I've heard within Tipp, I don't think there's alot of positivity that many off those teams will make the senior grade

he may have phrased it wrong but he has a point. .....henry shefflin is seen as the man to get galway bk on track but on what grounds just because he won 10 allireland medals as a player or won a club all ireland with ballyhale doesnt mean that he is going to transfer that success as a manager with intercounty teams ......success as a player has nothing to do with success as a manager ...john kiely was only a sub on the limerick team in the 90s and when he was given the job as limerick manager it was all low key and expectations were low and now he could be set to become the greatest ever hurling manager behind brian cody.

Won a few balls and put them over the bar too. Was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time to turn those close games in favour of Kilkenny and those losses into victories. Definitely very lucky as a hurler and that carried on into club management too. Only for him having a team full of intercounty stars and other better players who were too busy with their day jobs to commit to intercounty he wouldnt have won any club all Irelands at all. Pure luck again. If he hadnt been lucky from birth and had of been born in Ulan Bator instead of Ballyhale I bet he wouldnt even have won 1 of all those all stars.

That would surely be a failing of management. Its hard to believe only a couple of players out of 30 odd under 20 all Ireland winners are good enough to make it at senior intercounty. Morris was a great player on those 2 teams but he didnt win those games all by himself.

True enough, Viking. There was plenty of talent in Tipp Under 20/21 teams of 2018 and 2019. They were well motivated and organised under Liam Cahill but for whatever reason only a handful got championship game time under Sheedy. I would have expected the likes of Brian McGrath, Paddy Cadell, Mark Kehoe, Dillon Quirke and others to be established senior players by now. They all played for the Tipp team that beat a Cork team that included Mark Coleman, Niall O'Leary, Conor Cahalan, Darragh Fitzgibbon, Shane Kingston, Tim O'Mahony, Declan Dalton, Robbie O'Flynn and Jack O'Connor in the last Under 21 final in 2018. Mark Kehoe's case is very strange. He was a very effective impact sub in the senior semi-final and final of 2019 but got very little game time from Sheedy in 2020 or 2021. Young players need an extended run to build up their confidence but giving lads just five or ten minutes at the end of a game is not going to help their development.

From the All Ireland in '33, which they lost to a last minute goal scored by 'Lovely' Johnny Dunne of Bennettsbridge, Limerick went unbeaten in any game except that '35 Final until the Munster Final of '37. The year of the bereavement was '41, when another Mackey brother, Paddy, died at about 21 years of age. He was a sub in 1940, when 11 Ahane won All Ireland medals, seven started, one came as a sub and three more were on the bench

Thank you for a common sense look at this. I agree 100% with your post. Just give the guy a chance. Shefflin spent a lot of years around Cody so surely some of Cody's wisdom rubbed off on him.
