Westmeath putting in a heroic performance to beat Wexford in their own backyard gives a lot of hope to the underdog. We dont all have the loser attitude like yourself Mick

explain your logic . a team which bottled important games this year already this year will suddenly find a spine because of the hurlers . marvellous logic

Let's give westmeath a chance, it's a very tough draw and going to be very difficult play against 3 div 1 teams and get results. Hopefully we can compete and see where that brings us. Any injury updates or has Dessie a full hand to pick from. I presume he will stick with his tried and trusted. Hope to see a few younger lads get some exposure over next 3 games Upforthegame23 (Westmeath) - Posts: 114 - 23/05/2023 10:08:03 2480766 Link 0 |
Excellent message. No one is expecting the team to get near Armagh, Galway and Tyrone. Chance to start the plans for 2024 by giving game time to some of the younger players who will be the backbone of the county team over the next 6,7,8 years. Good opportunity for all of them, especially the more established players and management, to test themselves against top class opponents. I'm looking forward to going to the three games and I hope the lads are competitive. Yop Westmeath Mountlin (Westmeath) - Posts: 59 - 23/05/2023 10:32:39 2480792 Link 0 |
It is no doubt a v tough group. First up - Armagh have not exactly lit up Div1 and are not a polished Div 1 side. This year they have tasted more defeats than wins. They looked well prep'd v Derry and will be stinging from that defeat at the hands of Derry. Armagh lost on penos to eventual finalists (Galway) last year... so will (in their minds) be outside contenders in 2023. WH have not performed well in the northern pitches under previous mgr nor this year, and this is a great opportunity to bring the fight. They need at a minimum a battling performance on game #1 ... or it could be a rough championship! Game #1 is big for some momentum... What younger players do you want to see? What iv seen this year is Baker is the only young player that is up to play senior football at the moment. Dessie should be putting out his best team. Going out to get results. We have nothing to lose in all 3 games… Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 520 - 23/05/2023 12:15:18 2480844 Link 0 |
Couldn't agree more on Baker. An absolutely brilliant player who has shown he is ready for regular inter county football. His younger brother is showing signs of also making the step up to senior football and had a good year with WH U20s. I know Matthew Whittaker is out which is unfortunate for the young man. Think Daniel Scahill, Conor McCormack, Darragh Seery and Sean Leech would gain valuable experience from starting at least 1 of these games along with coming on for 20mins in the others they mightn't start. Been a dissappointing year after last years heroics. 2024 preparation starts on Saturday and whatever happens in the 3 games it is important to take any positives that come about. Strange comment Temple56, is there much point fielding at all next year, baker going well and can Only develop at this level like other young players. scahill and mccormack played most of league, seery played against louth. They all good players. Whittaker will hopefully make an appearance before end of year, leech, dillion, smith deserve a chance. Plenty of younger players coming. Do you expect the over 30s on panel to play for another 10 years. Did they start somewhere or just be experienced automatically

As I said above Baker is good enough. Whittaker will also be a senior player in the near future but let's be honest as the moment is he any better than Robbie Forde, Shane Dempsey or TJ Cox who can't get near the team at the moment??? Conor McCormack is definitely good enough and should be starting at 11. But is 25 years of age so 100% not a young player. Conor Dillon also 25. Both were on the u20s in 2018. Stephen Smith is 26. Havnt seen enough of Leech. And has never played a minute at this level. Players should obviously be brought in by Dessie however Dessie is under pressure so he is going to pick his best team. Which at this moment in time includes players who are 30 and above. Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 520 - 23/05/2023 20:17:28 2481077 Link 0 |
If the selectors pick the best team but that's a fairly forlorn hope based on team selection the last day. There's no way that any other football fan in the county would have chosen that 15 to start, the selectors then compounded their errors by either making wrong subs or subs too late. Lads ye are talking about players like Bakers younger brother ,hes a fine footballer but hes 18 and was a sub on the 20's,didnt start one game. Leech never played a minute with the seniors ever or the 20's this year. All for bringing in new blood but not firing lads into the deep end just so we can say we introduced someone new. As one poster said we have lads in the panel with senior championship medals and years of senior championship experience not able to make the 26. We had an small extended panel and lads on it don't consistently stand out on the club scene, and lads on here are referencing 18 year olds and some lads not even playing senior .Lighting up Cusack Park in a couple of Intermediate/senior games a year doesn't automatically make you county senior standard

Temple56 you club is obvious. You bias even more so. Of course dessie has to go with a strong team, but as I said I would like to see younger players integrated into the team during the next 3 games. Could I ask u for your suggested team... Upforthegame23 (Westmeath) - Posts: 114 - 24/05/2023 08:41:22 2481131 Link 0 |
Which club am I from? If everyone was fit this would be my team. Heslin in midfield to play an attacking role. He wouldn't be afraid to kick the ball in. James Dolan at 12 to drop back and help the back 6. Ronan O Toole to drop out and have a free role. Two inside Baker and Loughlin 1. Jason Daly 2. Jack Smith 3. Kevin Maguire 4. David Giles 5. Nigel Harte 6. David Lynch 7. Ronan Wallace 8. Ray Connellon 9. John Heslin 10. Sam McCartan 11. Conor McCormack 12. James Dolan 13. Ronan O Toole 14. Senan Baker 15. Luke Loughlin Best 5 subs: Jamie Gonoud Sam Duncan Stephen Smith Lorcan Dolan Kieran Martin Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 520 - 24/05/2023 11:22:41 2481186 Link 0 |

So just the one younger player, even in your subs. Your all about development so. Seery and scahill not even in your 20. Heslin gone to midfield??? Who will be winning the ball. Your two man inside line haven't exactly shot the lights out this year.

Whatever club he supports he clearly hasn't been at a club game in approx 6 years, John Heslin's days as a midfielder were few and far between and whenever he played there for Loman's it invariably boosted the opposition chances. That's no slight on him but opposing team managers were always thrilled when the chief scoring threat was 60-70 metres from goal. I'm all for giving younger lads a chance if they are good enough and I don't want to be putting young players down but you can't say that these two you have mentioned are better than the 20 I have named. Seery has played about 20 minutes of senior football in his career. That includes club and county. Scahill has a good league but was only in because some regulars were out injured. He didn't stand out in any of the u20 games I attended. Looking forward to see how he gets on in his 1st year of senior club football this year !!

The team posted has the usual Lomans lads that everyone would have being honest ,dont think youd have to be a Lomans supporter to include them .Scahill did well in the few games he's played and shows promise but hes no Michael Fitzsimons and Maguire is going to leave a huge hole when he retires at full back ,Seery is three years with that panel and played 15mins against Louth in the whole League and championship, Leech is in there just all this year and never played . All good lads but the step up to play consistently at that level is huge so there has to be a balance between bringing in new and tossing out older lads. There are other young lads out there ,perhaps create a development panel and have them playing challenges and on gym programmes now with a 2024/25 view is best .throwing three of them in against two northern teams and last years all ireland finalist is not going to improve anything only mabe get them hurt without the proper experience and conditioning
