Countys seem to just ignore it now and play loads of challenge games each week. Should the O Byrne cup become an U-22/23 competition or does that add more fixtures clashing with sigerson?? Thoughts"
Ya a good idea to go with u22/23 players but I think the problem would be that all counties would have to do that and its unlikely. Sigerson starting would also be an issue as its same players. For some counties its the only chance of winnings anything with the county so its important for them. Could be a Interesting game for some players this weekend, I presume it will be an experimental team with a few snr players involved. Expect to see D mc carton, m whittaker and s leech play against longford.

Its up to each County to determine how they want to approach the O'Byrne Cup. Some will play their strongest side and go all out to win it while others just use it to test out new players. I have always been in favour of the latter. Who cares who wins it - does anyone remember who won it last year or the year before (without having to Google it) ?

I also preferred the competition when the Colleges were in it as it gave more players matches as it forced County managers into playing fringe players, as i think county players in College had to play with their College. I don't recall why the Colleges left the competition again but at a guess it would be because the the county managers weren't happy with that rule.

I see Eddie Kinsella confirmed as Tyrrellspass boss. Former intercounty referee from Emo and has managed his own club as well as Laois minors and 20's I think.

It's Daniel Sammon, Danny's son, heavily involved in schools coaching in Ballymahon, he's highly regarded as a coach.

I like that team but doubt Dessie will be testing out so many in a local derby. Great to be back at it although pitches will be very heavy after all the rain.

Great to see so many westmeath players playing the top colleges competition. Can only benefit the county with so many players exposed to the high standard of sigerson

I see Seamus Quinn has been announced as Tang manager for 2024. I remember him as a brilliant full back for Leitrim and has coached various clubs in Roscommon and Longford. Another job filled. Any word from Killucan ?

It wouldnt be a bad idea to give the U20s a run in the O Byrne Cup as the Development League ( Philly Mc Guinness) was scrapped this year for whatever reason. The O Byrne has no real benefits anymore regardless of what team we put out or outcome of match. They are playing enough challenge matches as it is . Longford put out their strongest team in last years competition and went downhill after.

Would Westmeath be better off having the likes of Brandon Kelly, Fleming, Ciaran Daly, and other borderline county players/very good club players rather than having U-19s and U20s in the squad or is it best to get them into the set up straight away? Does the current situation not lessen the playing pool rather than grow it and if an u20 is flying it then there brought up? It doesn't sit well with me having a 23/24 yr old who may of had a great club championship to not get picked and an U-19 player gets into the squad off the back of nothing. I thought that development squad/Maroons was set up for that reason.
