After eating the spuds I've thought of others; Ballyhealy, Clonlost, Drumcree, Dysart, Ballinea, Bellview, Clonmellon, Rahonnell, Churchtown, Kilbixy, Kiltoom, Lismacaffrey, Lisryan (Longford?) and I'm sure the list goes on. Every village and crossroads at one time or another - especially if there was a pub nearby !

Kilbixy Gaels was Ballynacarrigy, I think. Lisryan is in Longford.

Columb and custume would have had teams I presume. I see Dysart and Boher I presume they would be malachys now or streamstown. PowellJohn (Westmeath) - Posts: 95 - 25/11/2021 15:44:57 2390806 Link 0 |
Gibbonstown- also known as The Park and also took in players from the townlands of Gaulstown and Mahonstown joined up with the Rochfortbridge Warriors to form St. Marys Rochfortbridge and won the senior football championship the first year they were formed in 1950.

Columb Barracks took part in the JFC in the late 1940s and Custume Barracks were competing up to mid 1950s. Presumably they also had their own Army competitions. I recall Western Command playing Aer Corps etc.

Yeh it would be right beside it. Would need to look at the timeframes but would guess many of the same people were involved in each club.

It could only be them. The army had over 40,000 men during the 1940s but after the war it was gradually reduced so their ability to field teams diminished. During the 1960s some of the Mullingar army lads played with The Downs. If you are of a certain age you may have seen fellows playing, sporting dark tans after serving in the Congo.
