Mayo GAA Club Championship 2021

Mayo Junior football championship round 3:

Group 1:
Ardagh V Kilmeena
Venue: Newport

Both teams are through to the quarter finals so it's the case of who finishing top and 2nd. Kilmeena beat Ardagh in the league so Ardagh will want to get one over them.
Kilmeena are top 2 favorites for the junior title.

Kilmeena by 4.

Tourmakeady V Kilfian
Venue: Foxford

Both teams are out of the championship but it's a case of pride and also Kilfian will have fond memories of beating Tourmakeady in the 2020 county Exclusive B Final earlier this year which was a huge success for a small club. I believe Tourmakeady have improved after while Kilfian have been hot and cold with their form.

Tourmakeady by 4.

Group 2:
Achill V Kilmovee Shamrocks
Venue: Achill???

This is a win or bust for either team.
Cill Chomain are through.
Kilmovee have been protesting over why should they been playing in Achill as Achill were supposed to play Lacken at home in round 2 but since then Lacken have pulled out of the championship so Achill got the 2 points.
Regardless where the match is played I believe Achill will win.

Achill by 5.

Cill Chomain V Lacken Sarsfields

Lacken Sarsfields have pulled out of the championship so have conceded the last 2 games V Achill and Cill Chomain.

Group 3:
Ballycastle V Moygownagh
Venue: Lacken

Another win or bust tie for either team.
Ballycastle will be delighted with Round 1 win over Eastern Gaels but Shrule/Glencorrib were to strong in round 2. Moygownagh will be happy as they have been struggling with players availability this year but put up encouraging displays in the last 2 rounds.
It's a derby game so no love lost between both teams.

Ballycastle by 5.

Eastern Gaels V Shrule/Glencorrib
Venue: Garrymore

Shrule/Glencorrib are through to the quarter finals but will want to remain unbeaten. Eastern Gaels will be disappointed with the round 1 lost to Ballycastle but to cause an upset the next day is a long shot!

Shrule/Glencorrib by 3.

Group 4:
Islandeady V Ballycroy

Islandeady are not through yet to the quarter finals but they should account for Ballycroy. Islandeady are keeping quiet in the camp and are promoted to Division 2 and an impressive 12 points win away to Killala in round 1.
Ballycroy will be sore after there 1 point loss to Killala in Glenamoy where they should be playing in Ballycroy.

Islandeady by 7.

Killala received a bye.

Mayo Intermediate football championship round 3:

Group 1:
Parke/Keelouges/Crimlin V Swinford
Venue: Kiltimagh

Parke/K/C have scored 8 goals in 2 championship games which shows they mean business this year.
Swinford will be very sore after their last minute goal defeat V Moy Davitts Round 1 and round 2 losing by 1 point to Bonniconlon. Swinford just stayed up last year by their finger tips so they need to get prepared for another relegation scrap.

Parke/K/C by 5.

Bonniconlon V Bohola Moy Davitts
Venue: Parke

Both teams are fighting for 2nd place while Bonniconlon will be delighted with their win over Swinford after their awful hammering V Parke in round 1. Moy Davitts 1st year back in Intermediate shows they don't look ready to go straight back up. 3 forward Anthony Jordan, Brian Reape and Sean Kelly are a huge loss. Anything can happen.

Bohola Moy Davitts by 3.

Group 2:
Hollymount/Carramore V Burrishoole
Venue: Ballintubber

An upset could happen here Hollymount/Carramore were my favorite for the title this year but their 7 points lost to Mayo Gaels Round 1 got me thinking. Burrishoole are a Intermediate team in the name for the past 11 years so not good enough to go up or down.
Burrishoole can still cause an upset but I still go for Hollymount/Carramore.

Hollymount/Carramore by 4.

Lahardane McHales V Mayo Gaels
Venue: Westport

Bottom V top! Mayo Gaels have been impressive in this year Championship and could be dark horses. Lahardane 4th season as Intermediate and failed to get out of the group in either 4 seasons.
Preparation for relegation play offs is for the Nephin men to think about.

Mayo Gaels by 3

Group 3:
Ardnaree Sarsfields V Kilmaine
Venue: Swinford

Ardnaree are gone so Kilmaine need to win and hope Louisburgh beat Kiltimagh to go through the quarter finals.
Ardnaree will be disappointed with their 6th season as Intermediate and 2 quarter finals to show for but unfortunately it was a very tough group.
Kilmaine need to win I believe they will.

Kilmaine by 2

Kiltimagh V Louisburgh
Venue: Knockmore

Kiltimagh were also another big favorite for me to win the title and could be out this weekend if they won't win this tie.
Louisburgh are flying this year but need to win this tie to go through.
It be close and the game of the weekend in this grade.

Louisburgh by 1

Group 4:
Ballyhaunis V Castlebar Mitchels B
Venue: Ballinadine

Win or bust for either team and it's very hard to call.
B teams can be poor, average or brilliant all depends on availability of players. Ray O'Malley, Aiden Walsh and the 2 Stensons have been playing for the B despite being regulars for the Seniors over the years. Ballyhaunis will have their work cut and they be tired after their duals players playing a tough hurling match last week V Tooreen.

Castlebar Mitchels B by 2.

Ballinrobe V Crossmolina Deel Rovers
Venue: Balla

A change of jerseys is a regular thing for both teams for years as they have playing each other in Intermediate and Senior Championship in the past 10 years so they know each other out but unfortunately it's a dead rubber tie as Crossmolina are through the quarter finals while Ballinrobe are in relegation play offs.

Crossmolina Deel Rovers by 3.

Castlebar v Ballaghadereen on Friday evening is winner takes all. One of them will be knocked out. Andy Moran might have more time on his hands for leitrim after this weekend :)

Charlestown vs Knockmore is the other big one. Knockmore are defending champs but need a win to make it through to the last 8.

Mayo Senior Football Championship Round 3.

Group 1:
Ballintubber V Claremorris
Venue: Hollymount

Ballintubber are through to the quarter finals and still not gone away so this may be there last shot for a Senior title.
Claremorris have been poor in this level for quite some time only 2 Semi Finals to show for 2008 & 2017. They need a big performance to cause a shock.

Ballintubber by 4.

Ballina Stephenites V Davitts
Venue: Charlestown

Ballina got back on track after beating Claremorris after losing to Ballintubber by 9 in round 1. Davitts also have been poor at this level since promotion to Senior 2012 only 1 quarter finals to show for. They are a good relegation team so will be in the dogfight again.

Ballina Stephenites by 5.

Group 2:
Belmullet V Aghamore
Venue: Ballina

An historic win for Belmullet over Knockmore in the last round in the wet/windy Erris so confident will be high and it's about keeping momentum. Aghamore should be praise for there excellent comeback V Charlestown scoring 4 second half goals. It could go either way.

Belmullet by 2.

Charlestown Sarsfields V Knockmore
Venue: Breaffy

County champion Knockmore are in danger of being the 1st champion to NOT get out of the group since there great rivals Ballina Stephenites in 2008. Charlestown are a great monkey off Knockmore backs so it's will be difficult. The pressure is on Knockmore and Charlestown will embrace this challenge.

Draw

Group 3:
Ballaghaderreen V Castlebar Mitchels
Venue: Aghamore

So one big team will be out this weekend in this group of death! Ballaghaderreen blitzed Castlebar 2 years ago in the semi final but never seem to reach them heights again. Andy Moran/Michael Solan will want to finish the job with Ballaghaderreen with a county title before going to Leitrim so they must win this tie to keep their hopes alive.
Castlebar I believe are in transitional period.

Ballaghaderreen by 2.

Balla V Westport
Venue: Crossmolina

It been whirlwind 1st year back to Senior for Balla especially in this difficult group but they have put up encouraging display only losing by 5 Castlebar and 1 to Ballaghaderreen. Westport are flying and remain the team to beat in this year championship.

Westport by 6.

Group 4:
Breaffy V Garrymore
Venue: Bekan

Breaffy were made to work hard in their win over Kiltane and supersub Colm Flynn made a difference scoring 1-4. Seamus O'Shea was out injury so they will need him back. Garrymore will be delighted with their improvements after last year they were in the relegation play offs. Garrymore are the 3rd longest Senior team in Mayo so remain hard beaten.

Breaffy by 3.

Kiltane V The Neale
Venue: Castlebar

The original Tommy Goals Conroy V The present Tommy Goals Conroy! Both teams are out to win to avoid the relegation play offs. Kiltane are expert for survival while the Neale are only in there 2nd year playing Senior football.

Kiltane by 2.

Anyone have any concrete info as to whether the senior final in Ballina is completely sold out? Any chance of more tickets being released for general sale?

Saw a debate on another thread about the Kerry club championship being unfair on other counties as their 9th best club plays in the all Ireland intermediate club championship (which they tend to win a lot).

Considering Kerry's demographics and population is much the same as Mayo, their better record in senior county has to be related to their superior club championship m, which gives all the best players in the county games in the Senior county championship.

If we did the same in Mayo we would have a county championship next year with the below:

Bellmullet, Knockmore, Garrymore, Westport, Breaffy, Castlebar, Ballina, Ballintubber.

Then the 9 baronies could have a set of playoffs (to help them warm up for the senior championship) where the top 8 go through to the senior county championship

Erris
Tirawley
Burrishoole
Cara
Gallen
Costello
Clanmorris
Kilmaine
Murrisk

A senior championship with the below groups would be something else

Erris, Belmullet, Burrishoole, Westport
Tirawley, Ballina, Knockmore, Gallen/Costello
Murrisk, Kilmaine, Ballintubber, Garrymore
Cara, Clanmorris, Castlebar, Breaffy

All the counties best players would be playing senior championship football every year and the counties top clubs would be pushed harder too - with the result that our clubs and county team might start winning the big matches
