Replying To Claretandblue:  "That's all you give though Jobber. Pie in the sky getting more lads hurling in the clubs you mentioned. Are the likes of Brian McCabe, Sean Smyth, Denis O' Rourke meant to give up working altogether and become full time coaches? They're doing well to field teams as they are. The likes of Noel Gavin and Keith Gorry doing Trojan work in Brigid's so no need to insult their efforts. What teams you involved with?"
."St Brigids is an organisational mess and even a modest improvement in club management would give us that" .....what an extraordinary insulting comment. This club is performing miracles keeping hurling alive in this part of the county.

Replying To preddan:  "It's very disappointing tbh, I'm every year waiting for the big breakthrough (a higher team scalp) for westmeath hurling but another year gone and it has not happened, I'm. Here since 1999 when that v good minor team was v close. I was full sure Dublin could have been got at yesterday and I was hoping for a big u20 win too.... I'm still hopeful for something from the wexford game but beating Antrim now is massive for championships in to the future and the younger players coming through to senior.
I do think westmeath will beat antrim and survive but maybe not progressing as alot of us hoped for this year. The years of 50 50 games with the likes of carlow, down, kerry, meath, kildare etc are all behind westmeath now they've progressed on but to get the next big scalp is the big thing."
Preddan Westmeath minors beat ours twice in 3 years around 10 years ago and beat Kilkenny at u21 in 2016!

Terribly insulting comment regards Brigids. A mostly footballing area but love their hurling around Dalystown/the bridge/tpass/ Mtp too. A match for anyone on their day always competitive and great numbers underage. Yes results haven't been grest at adult level the last few years but they will be back.

Ah right it was just you said you were there since 1999 and it, taking a big scalp in an underage game, hasn't happened in that time.

Westmeath beat Wexford in Minor Hurling in 2015 at Wexford Park but don't think they won a second game against Wexford within the last decade

Ah no bother,no it's senior I meant that a big scalp is needed for Westmeath to move on to the next level..

Definitely Preddan. Would be a great boost for hurling in your county. Hopefully it's not us though!

Not a lot to say after one of our most comprehensive defeats ever, 34 points difference on the scoreboard but it was actually worse than that on the pitch. Galway we're playing at a hugely different level, their control, fitness, movement, physicality, accuracy, everything was done at an extremely high level and we looked yards off the pace in every aspect. Must be difficult for the players to put in an effort and come up so short so regularly. Obviously the Antrim game was always going to be the key one like the Laois league one but even at home on the 28th it will be tough to beat Antrim. Demoralising defeats can't help morale, Niall Mitchell not togged today so hard to see him being match sharp, we have injured players but this defeat was tough to watch. Joe Fortune's body language on the line suggests someone who is finding the job hard. No surprise if he opts out at end of May. He's worked hard to improve us but there's a gulf between the likes of Galway, Kilkenny, Tipp, Limerick and ourselves.

Agree, no matter how loyal all of us westmeath hurling fans are, I think it's fairly clear we're not a top tier county, and unfortunately doesn't look like changing any time soon.
Separately Offaly seem to be getting back near the top table.

Offaly's progress is impressive, two provincial finals in succession, building a series of underage sides that bodes well for next 3-4 years, Wexford win last night only adds to the feeling that this was a massive opportunity for us.

Can only hope our u20s go a step or two further next year with a year's maturity.

I must be some idiot so. I went all the way up to Mullingar to see a division 1 game against Westmeath but it must've been against someone else. And I've tickets bought for Saturday week for a Liam Mccarthy game also against Westmeath. Should I bring them back and look for a refund in case I got scammed?!

As you can see there is some awful "supporter's" here in Westmeath

Surely recent performances give strong credence to the fact that we're struggling as a so called tier 1 county, three comprehensive defeats in the championship, similar last year and in both league campaigns

Ok so you aren't a top tier one county. But you are still a tier 1 county. Just like us!

I suspect some of these so called hurling fans are more concerned about the future of big ball and lose no opportunity to talk down our hurling team.We all see that this has been a difficult campaign but I suspect that no other aspiring county has had to face Clare,Limerick,Cork,Galway,Wexford,Laois,Kilkenny,Dublin,Galway,Wexford, and Antrim in a 15 week period. This emphasizes how important it is to have a top class underage coaching set up working year in year out.Clearly Offaly have an advantage so the board and coaching staff need to up their game.
