if the formats are going to continue as is then you'd imagine games will start earlier this year to alleviate the stress on our dual players. having 5 different start dates for the championship doesn't help anyone. realistically county footballers are getting knocked out after round 3 which is 18th of June, schedule first round for 2 weeks later Bunbros11 (Westmeath) - Posts: 67 - 27/01/2023 17:16:14 2454623 Link 0 |
Sorry I didnt see your post till now .I think Southern Gaels have been doing serious work in recent years and are producing county players at all underage levels.I appreciate its tough for them to keep players involved but thats not unique to Athlone.Ringtown have a real population issue but it looks to me that the other two arent doing as much as they should. The Gaels have several schools while Brownstown have a big school in Clonmellon. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1619 - 27/01/2023 17:17:07 2454624 Link 0 |
Tis all swings & roundabouts lads, happens in every county and at intercounty too. In the 80s Brownstown won 5, CTG won 2, Ringtown 2 and Raharney 1. The 90s was even enough, LLG won 3 after not winning for 30 yrs, Pollard also came back winning 2 (after not winning since 74, Raharney and Brownstown 2 each and CTG won 1. In the 00's Clonkill came back, winning 3 that decade, after not winning for 30 yrs, LLG came to an end winning 2, Pollard the same story, won 2 and nothing since, Raharney won 2 and pushed on, CTG won 1 and kinda pushed on. Since 2010 the championship has been dominated by 3 clubs, Clonkill winning 6, Raharney 4 and CTG 3. Some lads are dreaming about Southern Gaels here, unfortunately they're not even challenging in the diluted IHC, and don't forget Ringtown & Plunketts won the same diluted championship, the likes of Cullion and the wood won tougher Intermediate championships. And I guarantee you that Clonkill, Raharney & CTG won't be at the top of the tree forever, the underage in those 3 clubs, and I'm talking about around under 12 is not great. Fr.Daltons will be competitive if they can keep them hurling, Plunketts have the same problem. LLG will be back, not sure about Pollard. Delvin/Brownstown won a division 1 feile with mostly Delvin players, but Delvin haven't progressed. Brownstown, the Wood, Ringtown, Cullion & Brigids are in serious trouble and amalgations the whole way up to adult level might be their only saving grace. stonemadbeany (USA) - Posts: 596 - 28/01/2023 10:42:08 2454672 Link 0 |
Ah well I think Castletown, Raharney and Clonkill will always be competitive as they have the right structures at underage and still produce quality players. I actually see Clonkill at u12 level are doing well in the Leinster League, beating Naas and Gorey so they can't be that bad.

Serious concern for Westmeath with Niall Mitchell injured during the week, he's definitely ruled out of Clare game next Sunday and the hope is that his injury is not long term. Clonkill and The Downs will also be concerned as he's a huge part of their plans. With Derek Mc Nicholas retired Westmeath can't afford any injuries to forwards in central positions. There's only one school in collinstown as far as I'm aware and it's not exactly a massive one, as a previous poster said small rural clubs that had success usually had 4/5 sets of brothers on a team. Collinstown had the williams, murtagh, Kennedy's, people aren't having large family's anymore

Lough Lene Gaels also have Fore NS and as their area goes right into Moortown some of Castllepollard as well.

Just looking at the team sheets throughout the walsh cup it seems theres very little depth in the squad with a number of players like aonghus clarke, liam varley, cormac boyle etc. away! Many of the promising u20 players over the last few years dont seem to be in around the set up with a few becoming main cogs in there club squads like Josh Coll for Delvin, Luke Moore with Ringtown, David Hickey Jamie Mulkearns and the younger Keyes brother for Raharney, Andrew Shaw for Clonkill… there just a few notable mentions few more to go with it! Also the need for a goalie is huge Conaty is filling the void to a degree but we really need a proper goalie!! Westmeath190801 (Westmeath) - Posts: 6 - 29/01/2023 21:40:14 2455142 Link 0 |
Any update on the Niall Mitchell situation?

County minors played Laois over weekend. Any reports? What are minors like? Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1972 - 30/01/2023 16:25:10 2455329 Link 0 |
I haven't heard anything regarding the minor and u20s, I'm sure they've both been playing plenty of challenge games and preparing.

Doubtful if 20s have been playing many challenges seeing as a load of them are in with the senior set up. Tough task on Sunday for seniors in Ennis, Anything less than a ten point defeat would be considered very respectable. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1972 - 01/02/2023 17:26:27 2455847 Link 0 |
I would be very happy with that with no Niall Mitchell,Aonghus Clarke,Cormac Boyle,Robbie Greville and others facing a hungry Clare.

Raharney-Dinny Cahill Clonkill -Frank Aughey CTG -Buddha I presume? Pollard -definitely not Alfie, or Barry Kennedy. Possibly a man from Tyrone but could be wrong. LLG- Joey & Brendan Williams? stonemadbeany (USA) - Posts: 596 - 03/02/2023 14:07:28 2456168 Link 0 |
Frank Aughey also assisting Adrian Moran with Longford hurlers. Ringtown one of the most represented clubs at senior inter county. Pat burke, Charlie Flynn, Niall Moran, Jason Moran, Emmet Corrigan and Mark Cunningham.
