That Meath team should have beaten Offaly but were undone by a late goal in the last minute, a long hopeful ball in that found its way to the net. Not a bad Meath side. Westmeath led by 10 pts at half time and midway through the second half led 3-15-1-07. They knew at 14 pts up they were comfortable and towards the end of the game they switched off particularly in the backline. Im sure McKeogh will make sure they don't become complacent and finish strongly no matter what the scoreline is going forward. I was impressed with Aherne at full back, Dillon Burke in midfield and Conor Williams at corner forward. I think Burke got 0-07 from play from midfield which is fair going, big strong hurler. Antrim and Offaly will be a step up, hopefully we can keep improving.

The Meath attack made our defence look very porous in last fifteen minutes, three goals that could have easily been five or six, our forwards didn't do enough at that stage to stem the flow of ball, there was an opportunity to annihilate Meath at one stage, instead it was a nervy last fifteen minutes with only Burke showing the required fight and leadership. Winning the group is vital, coming second means away game to Laois.

Well capable of winning the group, there's quality there all across the field but despite winning the game by 9 pts its a fair assessment to say we were complacent and definitely switched off in the last 10/15 minutes which won't be good enough going forward. When we led 3-15-1-07 midway through second half that was the time to push on and be ruthless. The good news is they can definitely improve and get better. Good management there also. If we could get good fast quality ball into Padraic Monaghan, Conor Williams, Cian McKeogh and MJ Long we can cause a lot of problems as we did in the first half in particular

Meath strong finish more a case of Westmeath taking their foot of the gas than good Meath hurling ,although you'd wonder why they didn't move No.8 to full forward earlier as we struggled to control him when they did. Overall though it was a poor Meath display ,our forwards had lots of space which wont be available further on . We also had 3/4 players starting that played a tough football game 48hrs earlier which is not ideal. Bigger tests to come .

Team news posted for the seniors hurlers. It looks good on paper. Any insights as to form and fitness of the panel? Not to mention morale…
