I could be wrong here, but I think they won the junior in 93 when there was just Senior & Junior, the intermediate came back in 94.
They may have been in junior B finals since then, but that's the last premier final I remember them being in.

Last won the intermediate in 1986, well beaten by Plunketts in 1994. Those teams were predominantly made up of players from Galway, Limerick, Tipperary & Kilkenny with few home grown players. This current team is nearly all players who came through underage ranks in the club, showing the progress the club has made in recent years. They field on their own at every age grade and recently purchased land between Athlone & Moate to build two pitches.

Great progress by Southern Gaels a hugely progressive club crucial to hurling development in the county. Great too to see Brownstown back in a final a club who has given so much to Westmeath.

Football gets preference.Hurling championship started before football but despite having a round less finishes after the footbal.Poor game today but entertainment at hurling superior to football.Gaels will be delighted to be in final and will bring serious intensity. Castletown favourites a perfect situation for Gaels.

Good win for the Gaels, they worked extremely hard and probably deserved it by a shade based on desire and will to win, unfortunately for clonkill their big guns just completely went missing today and lay down when they needed them most, some of their forwards who had a brilliant year spent the hour looking for frees instead of hurling, their backs were solid tho for the majority. It was like clonkill were afraid to win. They will be back tho as that's a very young team, Peadar Scally again carried the forward line he's the player of the year this year hands down. One very sore stat for clonkill is apart from puck outs, I don't think Noel Conaty touched the ball in the game once, no team deserves to win a county semi final having not tested the opposition keeper once in a whole hours hurling, a cracker of a final in store in 3 weeks looking forward to the build up.

Shane Williams is a fantastic hurler, I hope Bulfin brings him on board. Outstanding again.

Hard to disagree with any of last few posts re match. Too many question marks over Clonkill beforehand based on experience of such occasions, likes of Murtagh, Shaw, Holding, Cleary, Kenny, Murray and Loughlin will learn from today, today was knockout championship hurling as distinct from round robin, they probably should have started Matt Glynn and Mitchell was a big loss but the Gaels far more experienced and in the last 15 mins it told. Derek Mc Nicholas contributed two vital points, two Williams' were to the fore, perfect win for the Gaels, tough, close match with no injuries or suspensions but will be underdogs in final. A year of progress for Clonkill, completely written off at start of year after losing 4-5 players with 8-9 senior championships each but developed plenty of players and back in minor final again. Decent crowd in the park today.

CTG will be big favorites haven't had any difficulty this year except first game against raharney. Bet LLG well in the group stage missing some big players like clavin and O Reilly. LLG will bring a massive intensity but their shooting is poor alot of wides yesterday again but should be a great game if CTG can match that intensity from the start they have the better Players should be 4/5 point win.

See Bulfin's plan to have a pre season competition which will be regional, aimed towards players who are not currently involved with the current Westmeath panel. Clubs will combine to form teams, possibly teams formed of 3 clubs eg (Southern Gaels, Fr Daltons, St Brigids). The idea then is to take the best players from the regional competition and put them up against the current Westmeath team in a high profile challenge in front of spectators.
I think it's a bold and ambitious plan by Bulfin but I like the idea, it's something different and in fairness it shows his enthusiasm which can go a long way. How they will decide who manages these regional teams will be another thing but I'm sure clubs can come to an agreement. Something for Westmeath gaels to look forward to during the winter period and hopefully it'll benefit our county team for the coming season.

Did the big guns go missing or were they held and shut down?

To add to that list, Dean Ennis Delvin, McCauley, Moore and Mark Cunningham Ringtown, David Aughey Turin, Eoin Daly, Marcus Kennedy and Darragh Qamar, Eoghan Ahearn, Gary Greville and David Hickey Raharney, David Maloney, Naoise McKenna, Peter Murphy, Jack Gallagher CTG, Diarmuid and Johnny Martin Southern Gaels. Probably plenty more I'm missing. I think it's a great initiative, and keep the whole thing open and freshened up. How do we think they'll create the divisional teams?
It seems the divisional competition will be ran before Christmas with the best 15 of that competition going up against the current county team sometime in January. Most likely in Cusack Park

Having been thinking about the quality players not involved with our county as of now, here is a
Potential team from divisional comp.

Conor Lynch (St Oliver Plunketts)
Jack Kearney (Fr Daltons)
Conor Shaw (Brownstown)
Dan Higgins (Lough Lene Gaels)
Adam Ennis (Delvin)
Rhian Holding (Clonkill)
Shane Williams (Lough Lene Gaels)
Eamon Cunneen (Raharney)
Peadar Scally (Clonkill)
Eoin Daly (Lough Lene Gaels)
Darragh McCormack (Castlepollard)
Liam Varley (Castletown Geoghegan)
Luke Loughlin (Clonkill)
Niall O'Brien (Castletown Geoghegan)
Josh Coll (Delvin)

VS

Current county team

Noel Conaty (Lough Lene Gaels)
Darragh Egerton (Clonkill)
Tommy Doyle (Lough Lene Gaels)
Conor Gaffney (Castlepollard)
Aaron Craig (St Oliver Plunketts)
Aonghus Clarke (Castletown Geoghegan)
Kevin Regan (Cullion)
Peter Clarke (Castletown Geoghegan)
Robbie Greville (Raharney)
David Williams (Lough Lene Gaels)
Killian Doyle (Raharney)
Niall Mitchell (Clonkill)
Owen McCabe (Fr Daltons)
Davy Glennon (Mullagh)
David O'Reilly (Castletown Geoghegan)

I think that first team would actually give our current county team a fair game, if not even beat them! O
