Replying To Dheen:  "Significant news with Southern gaels planning to move away from Pairc Ciaran with the purchase of 13 acres on the outskirts of Athlone Town to develop pitches. Fair play to them down there, they are really pushing for the growth of hurling in the area and should be commended for it. Similarly with Plunketts, Cullion etc who have been putting in great work. If we establish a solid hurling presence in our big towns it will make a huge difference to the game in Westmeath long term."
Wonderful news great credit to them. When they get it going it will open hurling to all young players around oyr biggest town.not just those who play big ball with Athlone and Maryland Tang but also Garrycastle and Caulry.Castledaly have started underage as well so hurling is growing in the south.Time for Moate to stand up.

Great news for the growth of hurling in your county, and nationally as a whole.

Very ambitious plans. Fair play to Southern Gaels. It would be great for the kids in Athlone to get the oportunity to play hurling. Maybe more of the football clubs could introduce hurling?

Just saw that Crookedwood have similar plans, very ambitious for a small club in a hurling heavy area. Ambition or lunacy...

I really believe the appetite for hurling is in Westmeath and not just in the North of the county. It is great news and positive for hurling in South Westmeath with Castledaly having started an underage club and possibly one or two more clubs thinking of doing similar. In fairness the county board are backing these ambitions from the clubs.

Castletown will remain the strongest team in the south for many years but the more clubs we have with ambition the better for everyone.Thats why hurling is strong in the north.Local rivalries

Brilliant opening championship match in Cusack tonight, Raharney just tipped Castletown with two injury time points, two excellent teams and well matched. Johnny Bermingham, Killian Doyle, Eamon Cunneen, David O' Reilly, Jack Gallagher, Robbie Greville and Plunkett Maxwell all influential, standard of play was superb all through, the only disappointing aspect was the poor attendance, two of the most likely championship winners, an ideal evening for hurling, both clubs had their usual share of spectators but seemed very few neutrals in attendance,

Excellent game tonight. Serious talent on show.

We have a bit of catching up to do based on that evidence

Good sign of the health of Westmeath hurling

Great game last night and played at a high level as well. Hopefully the other games will be as good across the weekend now. Aonghus Clarke, Peter Murphy came off the bench midway through the second half, I'd expect them both to start going forward, Mick Heeney was an unused sub probably carrying a knock, and I believe Niall O'Brien will be back towards the latter end of the championship so Castletown will get stronger as it goes on you'd expect.
I thought David Hickey, Robbie Greville and Eamon Cunneen had great games for Raharney and as usual Killian Doyle was hugely influential.
Hoping Plunketts can be very competitive later with the Gaels and put in a good performance.
Pollard and Clonkill will be a tight affair.

Castletown vs Raharney

Castlepollard vs Clonkill

Lough Lene vs Oliver Plunketts"
Expected Castletown to shade it yesterday evening
Clonkill to get over the line in this one
Gaels should have enough for a fairly easy win but it would be good to see Plunketts somewhat competitive

Championship Predictions
Senior
Between Castletown and Raharney, was a great game yesterday evening which could have went either way, but these are the two stand out teams with the strength in depth to go all the way, both teams will be getting all their key men back as the summer goes on. Castletown were impressive in the league final despite being down quite a few personnel and Raharney very strong and physical and not short on skill.
Gaels had a good league but apart from the first 10 minutes in the final were very much second best to Castletown. They have definitely come on under Joey Williams, especially in fitness, he's clearly getting everything out of the players compared to his brother in the couple of years previous. They are limited though and don't have the strength in depth of the previous mentioned teams, they have a couple of passengers on the field and are too reliant on David Williams for scores. In the final the full forward line was virtually non existent and 2 or 3 backs were very suspect. Between them and Clonkill for a semi place.
Clonkill in a big of a rebuild but have enough talent still there and coming through to trouble anyone on a given day, but definitely not near the force they were when winning the 3 in a row. A lot depends on the fitness and availability of their county men.
Pollard not a serious concern, will win a couple of games as usual but haven't the players or squad to put it up to the contenders on a consistent basis. Discipline usually an issue which they need to sort as well.
Plunketts will struggle for results, especially based on their league form which was poor enough in division 2, they are a coming team again though and would be great to see them competitive in games. They'll probably target Pollard or Gaels for a big performance in the hope of nabbing a result to stay up.
Castletown to bring it home in the final v Raharney
Clonkill for a semi spot with Plunketts making the drop back down.

Delvin and Daltons look the strongest in the second tier, Cullion had a decent league but it was div 3 and they were atrocious in their final against Raharney, they won't trouble the stronger teams. Castletown seconds not too shabby. Ringtown and Crookedwood had very poor leagues and are struggling for momentum, at least Ringtown got div 1 exposure though
Delvin to win it out, Dalton's to make the final and Castletown a semi. Crookedwood for relegation.

Brownstown and Raharney the standout contenders in the 3rd tier, way stronger than the rest. Would expect Brownstown to shade a final against Raharney second string but not a given. Brigids to qualify for the second semi final spot

Its backfiring on the county board. Put on Senior A double header and a Senior B double header and you would get better crowds. People are not going to pay 3 times over the weekend to go to the park.

Fair shout

Clonkill will have to handle Darragh McCormack, maybe with Darragh Egerton?
