There are no outside managers in the semi finals of either the hurling or football championships, why are the 'smaller' counties obsessed with the journey men Armagh, Kerry, Galway, Donegal Limerick, Cork, Clare, Kilkenny All managed by their own. Armagh, Kerry, Galway, Cork and Clare have outside coaches but led by their own men That's the formula. The players' influence here can't be understated, they want a big name from outside the county, for quite a few players this appt will be the last one in their inter county careers and there's a feeling that a local name will mean 4-5 retirements. That puts the selection committee in an awkward position as they can't afford to lose 4-5 quality players, I'm not a fan of players having a say but that's the reality at our level. Wow.He has some record, All irelands with Cuala and Galway under 21s, Leinster with the seniors and a hard man reputation.But i ask can you manage Westmeath the same way as Dublin or Galway? If the answer is yes i can see pain for some of our skilful forwards who spend a lot of time with physios.If we can build on that basis he could be the man. Há Há that's só funny. As if he was meeting the pope himself... Gimme a break.. This is going to get even more ridiculous unless they appoint someone.. You'll have the usual journey men putting in CVs for all these jobs including ours. Players with their own self interests hoping no local men will get it.

All candidates will be or have been met by the selection committee (Keith Quinn is not on this committee), obviously it would be good to have a manager in place before the weekend, I heard David Herity being mentioned too.

Significant news with Southern gaels planning to move away from Pairc Ciaran with the purchase of 13 acres on the outskirts of Athlone Town to develop pitches. Fair play to them down there, they are really pushing for the growth of hurling in the area and should be commended for it. Similarly with Plunketts, Cullion etc who have been putting in great work.
