It would be so easy to bring in the "what if's here, but we won't. Kildare next week will be a Leinster knockout will be another massive learning step. This team has proved that although young, the guys have what it takes. Another year, hopefully back up to Div 3 and a year or two rubbing shoulders with better teams, plus some great younger prospects still to join the panels. ( Positivity for a change) We need McConville to stick around though. No more " sack the manager". That never has worked and won't work now. Terrific win plus a badly needed and unexpected boost for all involved. Think the difference today was that in contrast to the league games we got goals at crucial times today rather than being hit by them as sucker punches. Great fighting spirit to hold on in the end too, well done all round. FearThoir (Wicklow) - Posts: 10 - 07/04/2024 19:09:44 2536318 Link 0 |
Kildare will be a step up but based upon their league performances, there is no reason for Wicklow to feel inferior. What I liked today was the character that the players showed. It is questionable if Westmeath took to the field with the wrong mindset but in the second half, they threw everything at Wicklow but the team stood up when they could have wilted, as other Wicklow teams have throughout our history but they didn't. Today was a huge step forward for this young team. It should give them belief and I hope motivation to want more. They should go into the Kildare game wanting to meet the challenge head on and give it their best shot; that is all I expect of them. I agree with you, there should be no talk of changing manager. Changing manager repeatedly is not good for continuity and the development of our young players. Here's to next Sunday.

Are we all looking forward to the 1 minute 47 seconds of "highlights", The Sunday Game will so graciously give us tonight? Wicklowman (Wicklow) - Posts: 1140 - 07/04/2024 19:58:58 2536336 Link 1 |

Boy, and were you right or pretty close. It's hard to imagine the editing policy of RTE - well, maybe given their recent turmoils and travails, nothing should surprise. The hurling league final ? It got a good going over and through last night so why again ? and I can't imagine that Monaghan fans were glued to their sets revisiting that which was featured on RTE 1 just a few hours earlier.

They are an utter joke. Some contrast between their coverage and BBC 's today.

RTE's Sunday Game programme is not fit for purpose and its been this way for a while. I don't watch it anymore but I did last night for obvious reasons. Changes are needed but I don't see them appearing any time soon. A simple change would be to concentrate on games that aren't shown live at the start of the game instead RTE think it is a good idea to focus on games that have been shown live and to have full analysis again even though they've had full analysis when shown live. They outdid themselves last night by including Dublin and Derry analysis in the programme despite the match being on last weekend. It feels like there is no producer of the Sunday Game, it is just thrown together. Also, there was a debate near the end of last nigh't programme about the provincial championship. Again, I don't see the need for this type of debate - it is the structure until such time as the GAA change it. Finally RTE don't care about the weaker counties, they are only interested in a handful of hurling and football counties as demonstrated last night when they focused on the Ulster football championship and a hurling league final despite the fact most of the counties in division one A and B of the hurling league didn't even take the league serious this year.

What's seldom is wonderful!. Fair play to everyone of those guys yesterday. Despite all the disadvantages of being from the 3rd world in terms of GAA Officialdom, to throw all that to the side and with nobody giving them a prayer, to say to hell with it, we're going to go out and give it a shot or die trying takes guts & character. Well done to all involved!. Hawkeye2 (Wicklow) - Posts: 144 - 08/04/2024 15:21:36 2536625 Link 0 |
I am reluctant to single out any player for special praise yesterday as it was a 20 man effort but I thought Dean Healy's leadership was outstanding. He's been an outstanding servant for the county and if this is his last year lining out, I hope he can enjoy days like yesterday and maybe one or two more before he signs off.
