Yeah, Theres only a handful of games in that u14PPL league spread out over the summer played on a Sunday morning. But you are effectively pulling the older u13s and the younger u15s into a makeshift team to and it seldom works out. Some of the bigger clubs like Blessington and Arklow have a group of u14s playng together in a lower division of the u15 so its easier for them to put out a team. On the flip side however Rathnew didnt field at all in u13 last year in what is a primary competetion and Greystones were beaten heavily in all their games in the U13B. Baltinglass arent setting the world alight at u13 or u15 either in recent years so there might be some truth in what Pat is saying clubfan17 (Wicklow) - Posts: 107 - 15/06/2023 16:02:39 2486713 Link 0 |
I am looking forward to Division 3 next year. sponger (Wicklow) - Posts: 2913 - 16/06/2023 08:31:22 2486766 Link 0 |
I'm looking forward to the senior hurling and football championships getting under way. Football is wide open but I think that Brays grip on the hurling cup is getting tighter. In my opinion, these league playoffs are a kind of phoney war.

I agree, the football is wide open. It will be interesting to see if An Tochar can build on the obvious progress they started to make last year. Tinahely got to the final recently but seem to regress and didn't build on what like a promising team; Eoin Darcy not being available last year obviously impacted them when you see his performances for the county. Baltinglass's league form hasn't been good and they will be frustrated at getting to finals but not winning them. Personally I think St. Pats have reached their peak but they will still be strong contender even at that. Blessington have good players when you look at Quinn and Co so they will want to add to their recent title. Rathnew can never be discounted even though I question if they have the talent to win this year. After that it is teams that flatter to deceive - Bray Emmets, Eire Og and to a lesser extent Dunlavin; although I do think with the right management they can do better than last year. The hurling is less open. Bray won last year and went on to win the provincial intermediate title. They will want to build on that. On the basis of Bray winning the intermediate leinster title, do the wicklow champions now compete in the senior provincial, does any know?

The hurling is a foregone conclusion. From what I saw last Saturday O honestly don't think Bray will worry about either team. The football is wide open. No team will be considered outright favourites. If it doesn't go to either Baltinglass or An Tochar, I'll go for a Bray double.

Has a team ever been relegated and won the championships in the same year? Would be great to see Baltinglass do it! blanket13 (Wicklow) - Posts: 2 - 22/06/2023 12:17:15 2488376 Link 0 |
I think that Balto possibly might be relegated but it would only be to the second tier of the league. Their senior status would be secure if they won the championship. They would be secure in senior unless they got dragged into those relegation playoffs after the group stages of the championships. They would only have to win one of those to stay up. So, overall, there is only a tiny chance they would lose their senior status, so tiny that it would be safe to describe relegation to intermediate as impossible.

If Baltinglass can't get out of a 5 team championship group then wicklow football is in a sad state of affairs. I'd be shocked if they don't make it to the quater finals . Its knockout football after that.

Brave man saying a Bray double in my opinion. Bray dont have the footballers.

Bray are probably having their best league for a while but I also don't think they have the players to make an impression come Miley time. The league is a bit funny this year. There is no way Baltinglass and Pats have become as poor as their league positions show. Rathnew and Tinahely are flying - can they keep it up ? I happened to see Tochair in one of those "nothing" top 4 league games. If they carry their current form into the championship they should get a good run again. AGB are looking interesting. It's hard to figure out Blessinton. No doubt they will be a different outfit when the real stuff starts in around 4 weeks or so.

Does anyone know know who the under 16s and under 15s are playing this weekend and where the matches are? A lot of preparation seems to have gone into these academy squads so it would be ĺogical to let supporters know when they are playing and where. 15s had a really good win v Antrim. The 16s were well up but lost by 2 points.

How is everybody feeling about the upcoming club championship? wondershorts (Wicklow) - Posts: 291 - 11/07/2023 10:59:10 2493737 Link 0 |
It will soon start to unfold. I think it kicks off the first weekend in August. I have been consistent every year in saying that you write The Village off at your peril. They and Bray have had great leagues. Bray will be interesting to watch. Pats, Balto and Blesso will be different animals come August. Tinahely have been showing promise. AGB are puzzling. They can blow hot and cold. The Dales must be wondering what they have to do to get on top of the Roundwood lads. That was a savage turn around Saturday but having said that, if Tochair go asleep for twenty minutes against the likes of Rathnew, Pats, Balto and the like they will find themselves put to the sword with no way back. August and September should be interesting. I hope that Mr McConville and his selectors can give the championship matches - including Inter and even Jun A their close attention. We will need more than half a dozen decent footballers to stay in Div 3. I am well into my twilight years and I would love to think that I wouldn't have see us in the basement division for the rest of my time on this mortal toil. We do seem to have a tendency to end up there despite our best efforts.

Was at the Bray and Rathnew game Sunday. Bray had three decent goal chances at the end of the second half to win the game. Poor decision making. Looked like a fairly soft penalty that Rathnew got also. Mileythedog (Wicklow) - Posts: 57 - 13/07/2023 12:16:56 2494102 Link 0 |
Seen a video circulating this morning of a match between Annacurra and Tinahely last night (i think) Div 5. embarrassment for the county. There should be heavily bans given, based on that video evidence. StrandedinWW (Wicklow) - Posts: 42 - 14/07/2023 10:47:10 2494285 Link 0 |
Saw that video as well. It is totally unacceptable. If I did that on the street I would expect to be up in court and facing a grim future. The County Board have a serious responsibility here. sponger (Wicklow) - Posts: 2913 - 14/07/2023 11:46:30 2494305 Link 0 |
I haven't seen anything yet but I often wonder why the Gardai aren't involved in more of this kind of stuff. Then again, nobody ever seems to see anything at these games - if there are no witnesses or people prepared to come forward what can they do. The ref is left to his own devices a lot of the time. Bans and fines within the GAA are not really effective deterrents. I was at a game recently where there was a schmozzle in the square between a few players. Handbag stuff. It was kind of fizzling out when a player ended up on the ground, more of a stumble than anything. When he was down, an opposing player walked over, gave the grounded lad a punch in the side of the head for all the world to see. He got a red card and a one match ban. I think the lad on the ground got a red too, just so the ref was seen to be fair, don't you know.

Well done to John Keenan. One of the better/more sensible refs on the go in my view; and they're getting scarcer. Will let her flow. Should have been given one before now. Passer_By (Carlow) - Posts: 521 - 14/07/2023 13:05:11 2494329 Link 1 |
