I think that sadly, very few care anymore. I see that our minor conquerors Louth were themselves knocked out last night so, we are still no better than quarter finalists.

Any opinions or observations on Saturdays game in Enniskillen? Other than that with, as another poster points out, there are 20 football teams listed to play in the county on Saturday. I think the result of Saturday's game in Enniskillen depends on which Wicklow team turns up. Fermanagh were relegated to Division 3 and were inconsistent; beating Kildare while getting hammered by Louth. Playing any Ulster team away in the championship is a difficult assignment. I'm hoping if Wicklow play to the same standard as they did against Westmeath then I give them a good chance of picking up a draw or win. I've no inside information as to whether players have gone travelling or if there are any injuries; both these things could have an impact on how we fare in the Tailteann cup. Down plus the two teams that came down from Division 2 are probably favourites to win the Tailteann cup overall but again this depends on these teams mentality and how they handle the disappointment of relegation and not being in the All Ireland series. Best of luck to the Wicklow team and management this weekend, hopefully they can pick up a victory.

I think Paudge O'Toole, Zach Cullen and young Darcy are available for selection plus Mark Jackson. These will undoubtedly strengthen the panel - and team, if selected to play.

I see a report in the Irish Independent that Mark Jackson has been invited to the Pittsburgh Steelers mini rookie camp for further trials so I can't see him being involved in the Tailteann cup. It is great to see the other three players back in the squad as they will strengthen the substitutes bench and in my opinion, should see game time.

I don't think Jackson will be there. RTE have a story about him trying out for the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend.

I see the Wicklow team was released last night on twitter; now x. It appears that all the players have stayed and committed to the competition. I know that players can still leave at any stage in the next few weeks or beyond. It is a strong looking squad, I can't name any player that I think should be in the squad ahead of the players that are selected. Hopefully the team can pick up from where they left off in the Leinster championship. Learn from the experience of the Kildare game when they had the chance to win the game but failed to take it. Fermanagh were competitive in Division 2 especially in the first half in their game against Donegal who are in the Ulster final plus Fermanagh beat Kildare in Enniskillen so this is a tough assignment today, I'll be interested to see how the team perform. wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 1928 - 11/05/2024 11:25:59 2544039 Link 0 |

Bad day at the office today. Listening to the commentary, seems that the team reverted to what they were doing in the league, porous at the back, conceding multiple goals and generally not being at the races. They can still qualify but will need to improve significantly in order to get a result against Laois and Carlow now. It seemed that there was a lot of changes before the game and during the first half - were they all injuries? Maybe it might be no harm if this season was put out of its misery as quickly as possible. We had a couple of good results at the end of the league and start of the Leinster campaign and a fair game against Kildare. Then the madness sets in again. Fermanagh are a pretty decent outfit but are we that bad ? Offaly stuck 5 past us in the league and London hopped off them today. If you were trying to place bets on any game we play as they do in horse racing, with working out form etc, it would puzzle Methuselah. This kind of stuff could hardly be made up. We will struggle against Carlow - as we always do and Laois, while we have a pretty decent run against them in recent years, will hardly be quaking in their boots at the thoughts of facing us.

I agree, its been a very mixed bag this year. I disagree about ending the season and putting us out of our misery, there are two games left, two difficult games but two games that will inform supporters about what the players and management are about. The squad can go through the motions of these two games or they can pick themselves up and right what went wrong today, beginning next weekend. They've shown character between league and championship already this year. I'll be interested to see their response against Laois. Also, if the squad want to be able to compete against teams in and outside division four then they have to be able to perform at a high level consistently. They can't play well one day i.e like against Westmeath and then concede three goals against Fermanagh or Offaly. I hope to see a response next weekend against Laois. Does anyone know if Kevin Quinn is injured? Also, why wasn't Nesbitt a substitute today, he played well at the start of the year? I know he was with the u20 side but I was surprised he wasn't part of the playing panel today.

I've been reading some reports of the game and three terms recur, sluggish, off the pace and not up to speed. There are a few not so complimentary ones in there as well which I won't repeat. How can a team be not up to speed at this stage of the season. Anyway, I was delighted for the Carlow hurlers today as they nearly pulled off the shock of the year if not the decade. After yesterday, going for 3 pts has to be more in hope than confidence. It is doable but we will need a massive step up from that sorry display

That was a great display today from Louth although more time will be spent dissecting what was wrong with Dublin rather than congratulating Louth on what they did right. In the opinion of many, Louth are making good strides at underage level for the last number of years and it's encouraging to see what investment in underage can do. Louth and Carlow are the two smallest counties in Ireland. Yet, both counties proved this weekend what can be achieved if a county sets out a plan of action, commits to implementing it and every one gets on board with it. It is not an over night success, it takes years to bring through players with the necessary skills to compete on the intercounty stage. Despite losing their manager, Louth have pushed on and built on what the previous manager begun. Success is not linear, there are setbacks along the way and a county may need to tweak what they are doing but you don't ripe up the whole thing and start again. The form of the Wicklow footballers in the last two years is patchy. So far in n 2024, they had a poor league campaign, a good Leinster championship. The jury remains out on the current Tailteann cup campaign. Three points from our next two games is still achievable but not if the team plays like they did yesterday. If they repeat what they did yesterday in their next two games, they'll win neither match. Improvement is required and they have a very short period of time to find it.

Was in Aughrim earlier for the CR match vs Sligo. We played well but squandered an 8 point lead in the 2nd half. Sligo had a goal disallowed but should really not have been that close. I mean we should be easily beating teams like them. BTW, there was a match on after, our u15 hurlers played Monaghan. I have never seen a bigger mismatched game in my life, final score was 11-28 to 0-2 ! We do have some fine hurlers at that level but the opposition were atrocious. I couldn't make the game but followed it as best I could. I see Sam O'Dowd back on the panel. He was injured but should help improve things. Pity about Danny Staunton. I think he might be just back from injury but is sticking with his club for the present anyway. There will be tougher games but at least these guys are giving it a real go.

Listening to interviews by Donegal players and backroom team yesterday, one thing struck me - how many times that players and management talked about the relationship between the players/team and the supporters/people of Donegal. In an interview after the Derry game, Ryan McHugh talked about conscious the players were when playing for Donegal and how sorry the players were for letting the supporters/people of Donegal down last year by their performances. There is a lot of talk these days about tactics, conditioning etc but this is the first time I've heard a team talk about probably the most important part of the GAA in terms of county teams and it is a desire to represent the county in a positive light.
