It is great yeah to be in a Connacht final..it's the last century since Leitrim had to worry about one. Sligo will be beaten in Connacht final no doubt about it and depending on the groups will most likely be beaten in all 3 All Ireland series games. Although one win could get them 3rd place but hard to see who they would beat. Fact is we're there which is more than Leitrim will ever be able to say and things are going well at underage for us so the vibes are good in the county at the moment.

It actually is doing you Leitrim fanatics a favour getting bet by NY. It might calm yee down a bit. Any time I see your posts, yee are worrying about games after the one yee have to play yet... will it be at home... will we have a full team.. will Andy change it around. You are where you are and have now had the wake up call that has come to Sligo many times. Sligo in my humble opinion will suprise the main stream media this year and are well capable of taking a scalp. Sligo will beat NY. Not arrogance but this team will not settle for anything less.

Nobody really knows where Sligo seniors are at yet. I haven't got any sense that we are pushing at full tilt yet. We played for 20mins against Wicklow and blew them out in that period and game managed the rest. Seems like we were on it last Saturday but London were weakened. Mentioning all the wins in a row and ignoring the level of opposition is pointless because some of those performances don't get you wins in Div3 so I wouldn't be getting carried away. The management are slowly picking better teams and squads. It is wild to me that other counties are selecting u20s from this year and we are struggling to give last years any chance but it was good to see Joe Keaney make the 26 against London. Eoghan Smith should be in there too. I thought the standard of NY/Leitrim was awful in terms of turnovers. NY had a strong and physical middle third which will cause us problems but if we keep it wide we will beat them. Leitrim were the better team just the pressure got to them. If we beat NY we will really see where we are in final and round robin but have to get there. Sligonian (Sligo) - Posts: 1741 - 10/04/2023 21:29:20 2470102 Link 0 |
Oh right. Time will tell. Arrogance usually comes back to bite you but enjoy the journey however rough it will be.

Agree with Sligonian...We will beat NY in Markievicz and after that will tell us about progress. Leitrim's poor finishing in front of goal did for them. NY play some good football but don't travel as shown in Offaly trouncing last year. tentonne (Sligo) - Posts: 69 - 11/04/2023 11:26:43 2470183 Link 0 |
I'm glad my comments about beating N Y stirred a bit of a debate on this normally quiet page. I didn't make any disrespectful comment about Leitrim, nor is stating that we will beat N.Y arrogant. If I said we would beat them by 10 or 15 points that would be arrogance. After Laois beat us in the first game of the league there was zero wriggle room so Mgt went with the tried and trusted lads he knew and hard to blame them . We got promotion. Too many times I hear, well we didn't win but we have bloodied young lads for the future which is great. This year it was totally about getting out of Div 4. Job done. Jack is a fine footballer and he will get loads more opportunities. The Mgt obviously felt that Cox was a better fit and that's what they are there for, to make hard decisions. Turning to our U.20 game tomorrow evening I have to say I love the U.20 championship. It's knock out football , no hiding place or back door. Last year's winners and favourites again this year are already gone. Lot of pressure on Mayo Mgt tomorrow evening. Losing last year didn't go down well in the Mayo circles and there was a lot of raised ebrows raised when the same Mgt team were returned. Failure to land a title this year will ensure that they will never patrol a Mayo sideline again. They have a strong team with a few lads involved with the seniors but they didn't do a Leitrim on it by pulling them out from the U.20 panel. Our players are extremely talented and focused. It will be extremely tight. We will need to take our goal chances, something we didn't do last week. Good luck to them eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1996 - 11/04/2023 12:16:08 2470210 Link 0 |
Some of those lads you mentioned have the talent but not the work rate. There's one lad who played a few league games with little or no talent but he worked like a dog and got games. With the better weather and faster pitches he will be dropping further and further down the pecking order.

Arrogance is what is needed. You have to be. Don't tell me Roscommon, Mayo or Galway teams and fans don't have a swagger when they come up against Sligo or Leitrim ? Nothing to lose by arrogance when you back it up By the way I don't see anything arrogant in what I said earlier.. just some "humble" opinion and some fact If you want arrogance though.. here it is ... Sligo will beat NY. Sorry if this offends you (oh by saying I'm sorry, does this lose it's arrogance ? ) thedreamer (Sligo) - Posts: 52 - 11/04/2023 12:38:35 2470226 Link 0 |
Mayo seem to be taking the u20 seriously Sam Callinan a regular starter for the Mayo seniors didn't take any part in the Ross game at the weekend which makes him eligible so there must have been some agreement there. My concern is if Luke Marren is tagged which is highly likely there are not many other scorers in the forward line. Henry, Doherty, McDaniel are workers rather than scorers. Think we need another score getter in the forward line like Flynn. Anto (Sligo) - Posts: 369 - 11/04/2023 15:22:55 2470300 Link 0 |
Best of luck to the u20s. No reason to fear. Although a Connacht semi final in Castlebar will be tough there's no reason our lads can't get a result. As eoinog said we will have to take our goal chances and as anto said Marren will be marked so other lads will need to step up also. From seeing them in the club championships and previous Connacht championships I'm sure they will. To beat Roscommon in the Hyde was a great win, to do it to mayo in Castlebar would be a real lift for the county. Best of luck to them. Sligeach Abú! I would think calling off U20 game in Castlebar tonight would be no harm for both teams. Serious wind there this evening. I think over 40mph. thedreamer (Sligo) - Posts: 52 - 12/04/2023 12:47:57 2470510 Link 0 |

If this weather keeps up will Markievicz be playable at all? Its heavy at the best of times. One advantage that ye will have is ye will be used to the heavy ground.

The so called neutral venue from last year

Best of luck to all involved. It would be some achievement to beat Roscommon and Mayo. Leave it all our there!! Sligo Abu republican (Sligo) - Posts: 338 - 12/04/2023 15:29:50 2470576 Link 0 |
We'll play it in Carrick if so…nothing good going on there for a while anyway and sure we've as good a record there as anywhere.

I assume on an outdoor pitch at Bekan. Although common sense would suggest that this would be better suited to the Dome, I seem to recall from last year that some stupid rule was quoted whereby a competitive game can only be played indoor when all games in that competition is played indoor. If that's correct the rule needs to be amended . I assume the justification for this rule was that it somehow is a different type of game when played indoor.....and for sure it is... but its not as much different from a "normal" game as a outdoor game in today's conditions would be. anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 960 - 12/04/2023 16:56:46 2470608 Link 0 |
It may not be playable either though. May have to go to the dome.

That's an interesting one on all or none to be played indoor. I could understand if it was a league format and some teams could get an advantage by having more (or less) games indoor, or say if Mayo were playing all their matches there. But in a knock out where it's the same for both teams, where it might otherwise be called off... Bawner (Sligo) - Posts: 39 - 12/04/2023 18:40:50 2470650 Link 0 |
Have unhappy Sligos friends that stayed in Castlebar for the night thinking the match would be played there. A new MacHale Park pitch whereby the drainage was done wrong is the issue here.
