Longford were in Division 3 that year. Bad season so far this year but they are the current Leinster minor champions so Longford will recover soon enough.

That's why I assumed he had to be trolling. I think in 1997 we played Galway AND Mayo in the league. Totally different to what you'd face now. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 813 - 04/04/2025 12:31:26 2600514 Link 1 |
They beat us by 7 or 8 points. That is not a hammering in Gaelic Football.

That match against Westmeath was a catastrophe. We were on the up and the time and to my mind, it set us back years. Westmeath kicked on thereafter for their own golden spell. Am I right in saying that a replay was acceded to by the Leinster Council, but Westmeath dug their heels in? We were used as "guinea pigs" that day as Cyril Hughes rightly put it, "sent down here to practice on us". Say what we want about our friends immediately across the Barrow, but Laois provided fair play in the 90s in the replay of that championship game. Collie Byrne is back in on the team. If I'm not mistaken he had left the squad and was back playing for Rathvilly but he's obviously back in now and is picked for Sunday. Don't see anyone else back in. I'd say it'll be the TC before we see one or two more back on the team or matchday squad. I see choo choo is on the bench but he'll be an impact sub anyway as soon as we need him which could be early. Good to see Kevin Murphy starting.

I was at the Westmeath match and it was a farce but there wasn't any mention of a replay to be honest. The worst of the sendings off was a Carlow player barely putting his hand on the shoulder of a Westmeath man as they contested a high ball. As we gave out about the awarding of a free the ref reached for the red. I've never heard a crowd so silent in disbelief. Out of the reds only one was deserved, when our hard working midfielder mistimed a shoulder and sent a player nearly out over the fence. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1536 - 04/04/2025 19:15:25 2600578 Link 0 |

We were initially awarded a replay. That was actually decided by the Leinster Council. Then Westmeath objected. And it was overturned on appeal. The sending off you're talking about was Ken Walker's. It was an absolute joke. It was hardly a foul and wasn't even near being a yellow but the rules that the ref had misinterpreted was that any yellow for all personal fouls were to be given as straight red. Absolute farce. And no back door then so that was the end of our season. Sickener and it set us back years as we were ready to make an impact then. The players were there. We had the experience of the Eire Og lads with five Leinsters won and the young Blues were then emerging and won their Leinster shortly after. We had the talent then. No, you're wrong and Passer By is correct. The Leinster Council voted to award Carlow a replay (in Tullamore), but Westmeath appealed to Central Council and it was over-turned. I remember it well. There was a lot of goodwill for Cyril at the time. He was a great dual player for Carlow at a time when we struggled at both codes (incidentally he would have played football with Luke Dempsey). What happened that day in Dr Cullen left a bad taste in a lot of mouths. A few of the players didn't really bother with inter county after. # Smokeless Red. I used the word " tedious " where as I suppose I could have used "bland or motoneous." Tedious has a few meanings as you know. Thanks for you post and interest. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3151 - 04/04/2025 22:56:15 2600601 Link 0 |
Funny how the years change the memory. I remember the Leix appeal as clear as day but don't remember the Westmeath appeal at all. We did have a good team back then and it shows the madness of No back door for inter county players. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1536 - 05/04/2025 09:35:13 2600613 Link 0 |
Sorry, spelling correction, " monotonous" ?
