Well done to Naomh Conaill on winning the reserve and senior titles at the weekend, they are a credit to their community and an example to all clubs on how to retain and develop players. They did it the hard way with big comebacks vs Termon, Four Masters, and Gaoth Dobhair. The new game/rules have changed how a team should try manage a game when in the lead, keeping the scoreboard ticking over is now a must rather than trying to defend a lead. Kieran Gallagher, Max Campbell, Stephen McFadden, Domhnaill MacGiolla Bride, Micheal Roarty all impressed me in the final and are worth a look at with Donegal seniors. Finbarr Roarty was superb throughout, he really came into his own in the 2nd half in the attacking third. Gaoth Dobhair will have a long winter wondering what could have been, prehaps they could have took on Peter McGee during normal time to help win more kickouts. They stuggled massively in the 2nd half to get their hands on the ball but had 3 chances in last few minutes to put game to bed. Overall the standard of football has gone down at senior club level (in comparsion to 2018 finals) with a number of teams (St Eunans, Gaoth Dobhair, Naomh Conaill, Termon, Four Masters, St Micheals, MacCumhaills, Glenswilly) all feeling they have a genuine chance of winning the Dr Maguire going forward if they have a full deck to play with. I feel there needs to a porper discussion around the club senior championship format, the round robin format of 4 games and the prelim QF's is a bit dragged out. I would love to see the reintroduction of the open draw 8 v 8 teams in a home/away/third game format. This would bring a better product and each game would be a proper championship game with something on the line. The final 5 games of the league could be put on when the Donegal senior team gets knocked out (mid July to late August) to ensure they all get back playing for their clubs in preparation for the championship. I would propose the 8 losing teams in the last 16 of the Championship are then into a Premier Co Championship with an open draw, played before senior championship QF games. There probably also needs to be a Div 4 league for weaker teams in the current Div3 league based on results as well.

Replying To Commodore:  "I'm not sure if Martin Regan would want to be a coach on the County team, and I am not sure Jim McGuinness would want someone with a managers mindset alongside him, he did say something in his Until Victory, Always book about the manager needing to be the final voice and Rory Gallagher was sometimes questioning final decisions."
Agree, I don't think McGuinness would want that alongside him, but I think that's what is needed, a strong voice with different ideas to challenge his thinking. The manager still has the final say, but ultimately someone stronger with slightly different ideas would help Jim and the team in the long run. It's worked for Kerry

If it was only league games that players were coming back after the county they are realistically going to need a break after the county season and you'll end up with players not playing enough for their clubs. It's just about ok now and how many matches they are playing and only just about.

And I know the first few games are a little dragged out but there was also a lot a play. Termon only got through to the last 12 because ardara hit a very late goal against glenfinn. Then termon knocked out the defending champions in eunans and were so so close to knocking out NC. NC couldn't really have played tighter matches in the quarters, semi and final. They must only be ecstatic about this years win.

I'd have a few other observations. Why did the final need to.take place 4 weeks before the Ulster championship starts and have to put the matches so close together. This question becomes even more pronounced when Donegal were in the all Ireland final Then perhaps why if it did happen so early could the match not have went to replay rather than et.

Maybe it does need a review but this year was overall a very even and competitive championship and that shouldn't be lost sight of.

Fair play to Glenties on another championship win.

I thought it extra time you were only allowed three subs? They used five?

You can start a different team at the beginning of extra time. Doesn't eat into your subs for that period.

There was no need for the rush, the game could and should have been replayed in 2 weeks time imo, given the commitment and effort the players put in I think sending the match to a replay would have been fair on both teams.
A 2 week break before the start of the Ulster Club Championship would have been fine, indeed it might even help the team not having so long a gap between matches.

Replying To greenfan:  "Jim McGuinness could do a lot worse than bring Martin Regan into the Donegal management team. He regularly makes the big calls during games when it matters, something Donegal could surely benefit from. His record proves he's a top class manager, better than a lot of big name ex-players currently in big jobs with little or no coaching experience. He's been successful with old rules and new rules."
Martin Regan won't be leaving Naomh Conaill. His record in phenomenal, 11 years Manager of Naomh Conaill, 9 Donegal Senior County Finals, Winning 6 of them.
Magnificent achievement with a great Backroom Team.

You submit a new teamsheet at the start of extra time, so its basically a new starting 15. During extra time, 3 subs are allowed. Thats what they used.
