Covid without a doubt is the main factor. The main drop off on numbers happened between 2020 and 2021 (3,500 drop in membership). Covid basically ruined the 2020 season

Club membership will be back up this year the chances of getting to an All Ireland final are better than last few years so anyone looking for a Ticket for Final needs to be member of Club. jacktheboy (Donegal) - Posts: 452 - 09/12/2023 21:02:40 2516153 Link 1 |
The fact that we don't really have an interesting division 1 also, I think, has had an impact on membership. The best 35 players aren't allowed to play league, the best of the rest head Stateside, makes 80% of the games less interesting, people don't come down to watch and are less likely to then join. Last year's league final wasn't even valued by the teams in it. SignTheContract (Donegal) - Posts: 197 - 10/12/2023 11:57:54 2516179 Link 0 |
Looking at the nominations for convention.. we still have too many of the usual suspects hanging around, too much musical chairs. Time for some people to stand aside and get some fresh ideas in there. For example, we have a former chairman who became the children's officer and now when he was replaced as children's officer wants to become the treasurer. greenfan (Donegal) - Posts: 586 - 11/12/2023 14:10:43 2516359 Link 0 |

The neck on these people is surreal. They cannot or will not read the room.

All counties are the same. Is there anyone to run against ppl and if so surely the clubs will vote for the alternative? Or is it a case of man doing his best as nobody else will do it but will continue ti hurl from the ditch?

The club member is tuned-in. Don't expect a rise in numbers should the convention go belly-up tomorrow.

Any predictions for tomorrow night?

Hoping we'll see changes but more in hope than expectation. It all comes down to the clubs and if they are all talk and no action, which they very often are. PeterQ92 (Donegal) - Posts: 118 - 12/12/2023 10:28:08 2516450 Link 0 |
What happened on the Zoom meeting last Friday night that McShea refers to in today's paper? Will that have any impact on proceedings? peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1074 - 12/12/2023 11:22:17 2516461 Link 0 |
Clubs are only as good as their delegates and unfortunately in a lot of cases the same two people are sent year after year. I was our club delegate but only did that role for 3 years as I think it needs new people with new ideas but it was nearly impossible to get anyone to take my place. A lot of people complain that nothing changes but you need to get involved yourself to make change happen. Contributing to this forum is just complaining it's not actively creating change it's looking out and trying to find someone to blame. Change can only happen if people get involved in what they think needs changing. Whateveryourhavingyourself (Donegal) - Posts: 59 - 12/12/2023 11:24:56 2516462 Link 0 |
Wouldn't have much hope for tomorrow night. These people will have their ducks lined up, they know how it works for many years now. Hope I am wrong though.

True, the same faces will remain in and around the county executive unless new people step up and equally importantly club delegates then vote for change. I'd say many clubs have the same delegates year after year as very few people would be willing to take up the role. Would be interesting to know how many clubs have an actual meeting prior to convention to discuss and instruct their delegates on who to vote for or how many simply leave it to the delegates to decide.

100% - I wouldn't be optimistic about the outcome of tomorrow night.

There have been candidates opposing in recent years but, and I might be wrong here, isn't there some element where the executive have more votes than the actual clubs when it comes to ratifying positions? I thought the system was rigged in effect but I'm open to being wrong on that. It's very often not a case of nobody else being willing, it's wrapped up in an old boys club in many cases.

That's not the way it works. The executive get 1 vote each, a club gets 4. The minor boards regional board, CnaM etc get 1 vote each.

Yes that is my understanding too although I'm not clear on the detail. If these old dinosaurs had any self awareness they'd remove themselves. PeterQ92 (Donegal) - Posts: 118 - 12/12/2023 15:28:01 2516514 Link 0 |
