why is everyone against Christie? I know results aren't great but reality is this is where we are.

Obviously all is not well in the Longford camp looking from the outside at least. I read that James Clancy stepped away a few weeks back any reason for this? I'd have thought from the get go Longford and Laois were the 2 teams that would be promoted and I wouldn't back against Longford winning their remaining 5 games and still getting promoted. Tipp did it themselves 2 years ago after loosing the first 2 games they still got promoted. Leitrim have played the 2 weakest teams in the league while I'd argue Longford have played the 2 strongest so all is not lost yet. lugdrum (Leitrim) - Posts: 357 - 06/02/2024 22:48:39 2524848 Link 0 |
That's reassuring. Longford have 2 league matches in the past two years, one a dead rubber last year. The beat Laois in a winner takes all on final day of 2022 season. OK they did beat Tipp in a relegation semi final in 2021. On that basis, cannot see them winning 5 on the bounce now B&G (Longford) - Posts: 367 - 07/02/2024 10:49:52 2524877 Link 0 |
the remaining games are very winnable. we had two of the toughest teams in Div 4 and ran them close. No morale victories but with the panel we have we would get hammered in Div3. wheres all the clonguish,Mullinachta players this year ??

The Clonguish players are either still in school, on the Under 20 panel or the one more senior player who might have been called up is away travelling.

As far as Mullinalaghta is concerned, Paddy Fox is captain and Jayson Matthews is in the forwards.

This will help things, Losing Duggan was a lose, Surely we have a strong u20 county team? still only two players, I would have expected more? wheres the Mccgivneys,McElligots,Rogers? I know they'd have a lot of football play played but surely they'd be better thats whats being selected.

A couple of those you name had already retired at inter-county level last year and others have emigrated (we've lost six players to Australia in the last 18 months). We are in any case a club who went out at the quarter-final stage last year and I'm not sure why we're still being expected to carry the county team when a number of clubs that are as strong or stronger are contributing nothing at all.

Half the team that lined out against Tipp came from clubs that won the last three senior championships. Most of the rest are well worth their place IMO. One or two might not be there if some lads were still around for selection, but that's life when you're competing against emigration, Aussie rules and lack of success. Clonguish are the outlier, but that was explained by an earlier poster. The issue is not large swathes of talent failing/refusing to commit. Last time we won 5 league games in a row was 2015. Last time we even won two in a row was 2018!! Almost certain we will slip up again (Leitrim or Carlow?). We are a division 4 level side who, despite our small population and the poor standard of our club championship in recent years, punched above our weight in division 3 for a good while. Perhaps the talent coming through the Clonguish underage factory will change things in a couple of years when those lads have some senior pedigree and a few senior championship titles under their belts. Beyond that I don't see any change soon, regardless of who is manager! It's a bitter pill, I don't like it anymore than any of you, but turning this around is a project that will outlast a few managers and starts with reforming our club competitions. Quinns gone past it, carry the ball into trouble, lots of mileage on the clock though.. I know we dont have anyone else. I think Hughes should be the no1 Keeper. Apologies about the clonguish thing missed it. agree with the latter. Our team doesnt change much since Byrne cup.

I would agree with this statement that Quinn is past it at this level. Longford are not going to get promoted and should be playing all the younger lads ahead of him at this stage to give them experience and see if they can improve.

Sligo & Roscommon doing this. Farrell a big lose at FB, Young Toole doing a decent job but that Tipp Full forward was hard managed big target man. Is shane Kenny playing football now?

Hopefully they do change the format. Div 1 league last year consisted of 10 games! Garmin (Longford) - Posts: 97 - 14/02/2024 09:47:31 2525982 Link 0 |
From what I gather, Division 1 will be a full league and not two separate groups. I think there will only be 10 teams in the league so it will be 9 games this year. Spinx (Longford) - Posts: 1346 - 14/02/2024 10:49:17 2526002 Link 0 |
